Baffled Disputing a credit card charge!

Not sure what to do.

Bought a refurb. Compaq back in September, it came with a defective hard drive. I called customer service and had a new one sent to me, it came and I sent the old one back. Checked my credit card online a few days after I called and was appalled that my card had been charged almost $300! Called them multiple times but NEVER got through. Called so many numbers I thought I was losing my mind, finally contacted Citibank and disputed the charge.

Now it is 2 months later and I get a letter from Citibank. HP claims that the CHARGE WAS VALID!

I faxed a form saying that charge was NOT valid and an explanation why (which I posted on complaints board).

Anyone had experience with disputed charges? There is absolutely no reason for this charge!!

I didn't know they could send me a piece of junk and then make me pay to have it fixed!!

If it didn't come with a warranty, that may be the excuse they used to charge you.

Even if you bought a refurbished computer, it still needs to be in good working order when you get it. Since the hard drive was defective, it would be common practice to send you another one, free of charge. It sounds to me like the person who arranged to send you another hard drive, they didn't do the paperwork right, so that you were charged for it. You should continue to dispute the charge, and should send copies of any correspondence that would help with this dispute.

Since you can't seem to get in touch with Compaq to resolve this, you need to tell your credit card company about that, and maybe they could give you a name/address/phone number for you to talk with at Compaq. That would be my next step, since they are telling Citibank that it's a 'valid charge'.

Don't you just hate it when it gets so messy ... and it wasn't even your fault ... and you're the one who has to fix it? Ack!!!

Called the credit card company today. She said I needed to give them a few days to scan my fax into the system. She said they don't deal with the merchants either and they have very limited information.

I have been searching for an HP phone number for so long! Can't find one anywhere!
