Web Scam Uses Child Porn To Pry Out Credit Info

WINNIPEG, Manitoba - Child porn is enough of a problem without this: a new Web scam being investigated by Canadian authorities, in which innocent e-mailers are accused of being child pornographers and "dirty money" dealers and ordering them to send in their credit card information to hide their crimes or clear their names.

The Winnipeg News reported August 14 that the unsuspecting e-mail recipients get a message line saying, "Your credit card has been charged for $234.65," and if the recipient opens the e-mail, he or she sees a message outlining a plot to launder the supposedly ill-gotten money.

"I'm totally unaware of that one coming out," said Cpl. Dan Bresciani of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police's commercial crime division to the News. "It's very difficult to police them all. We pick and choose the major cases."

But Bresciani also told the newspaper that, as "outlandish" as this kind of scam might seem, ssome people do get taken by them. "They start getting involved out of curiosity and they get in over their heads," he warned. He also told the News there's a registry of people who have been roped in by comparable cyberscams in the past making its way around the Web.

The newspaper cited further from the badly-spelled scam message: "We have just charged your credit card for money laundry service in amount of $234.65 (because you are either child pornography webmaster or deal with dirty money, which require us to layndry them and send to your checking account)."

The recipient is then instructed to click "Yes, and fill in the form below" if they want to go forward, bringing them to spaces for a credit number and expiration date, the paper added - with neither the phone number or return e-mail address operating properly.

"Use caution," Bresciani told the News. "We've got to spread the word that ... be careful, watch out for these. Don't let curiosity take over and don't let greed take over either."
