| Everyone's gotta try to break the rules somehow....!!!!!! Sep 19, 10:05 AM EDT School Makes Girls Wear Trash Bag Skirts NEW YORK (AP) -- Two Bronx girls reportedly had to wear skirts made of trash bags to class as a punishment for coming to school in jeans rather than their uniforms. The sixth-graders at the Bronx Preparatory Charter School were made to wear the bags by principal Marina Bernard Damiba, the Daily News reported Friday. Damiba called the garbage-bag skirts "Damiba fashions" and said they weren't meant to be humiliating. "It was more of a fun way to say, 'Listen, guys, wear the uniforms,'" she told the News. "Let's not dwell on something as simple as wearing the uniforms when we have a lot of business to take care of. We have a lot of learning to get done." Joy Vasquez, whose daughter, 12-year-old Christina Zuniga, was one of the girls who wore the skirts, at first said the punishment was "really wrong," the News said. But after meeting with Damiba, she told the News that her daughter "got a lesson out of it." Students at the school are required to wear a polo shirt with the school's logo and khaki, black, gray or navy blue pants or skirts that are at least knee-length. __________________ Check out these [Only registered and activated users can see links. | I think that is excellent punishment because it added the "embrassment factor" for the girls, so maybe they will learn. Its better than getting suspended and missing valuable learning time. WHY did their parents not know they wore jeans?

I understand I may be in the small percentile of ppl. who have a "problem" with this and I'm fine with that...I'm also not trying to say to those who are fine w/ this punishment are wrong. If they wanted these girls out of their street clothes AND make a POINT...couldn't they have at least been made to wear CLOTHES that would have "embarrassed" them?!?!?! Whew...I DO understand a point was trying to be made, but if this happened to any of my kids...ohhhhh I would be SO hot under the collar.

| My take is this: After mouse said how mad she'd be if they did it to her kids, I thought the same way! SOmeone else's kids....ok....(I know I know that's umm....what's the word here??? double standard????) But, do it to my kids and oh boy...... Anyhow though...what kind of clothes would you put them in to embarrass them in though....and yes, how did their parents not know they weren't wearing the uniform?? |

| I do agree with there being a lesson taught here... but I feel they should have been made to wear clothes... say something unfashionable or "frumpy" ... but the garbage bag... unless they had their shorts on under or something... i dunno..... I definitely think that parents should have been called and the issue discussed first!!! I am big on "community service" for misbehavior too... say scrub the bathroom or weed a flowerbed... I just think the embarassment of wearing a garbage bag is a little too far... maybe I am over sensitive. rual __________________ [Only registered and activated users can see links. | Yeh, something frumpy would have been better. I think the garbage bags were a stupid idea.
