I just ordered a couple books from amazon, both by Sarah Graves...Repair to Her Grave and Wreck the Halls.
Has anyone here read them? I figured, I like home improvement, ghosts, Maine, and murder mysteries, so these might not be too bad

Just finished "Sis Boom Bah" by Jane Heller. (Having a sister means always having to say you're sorry.) Fast-paced, witty, never a dull moment.

Oddly enough I am reading The Exorcist by William Peter Blatty. The movie scared the crap out of me years ago. I have always found that the book is better than the movie........so I thought I'd give it a shot. I picked it up at a thrift store for $.25. So far its pretty good.

I just finished The Ladies Auxilary about an Orthodox Jewish community in Memphis, TN. It was very entertaining, plus I learned ALOT about Jewish beliefs.

I just finished reading a pretty good book called "The Blue Bear: A True Story of Friendship, Tragedy, and Survival in the Alaskan Wilderness", by Lynn Schooler. I got it from the library.

It was written by an Alaskan guide ... who had/has many professional photographic/video customers that he guides around ... and one of them was a renowned Japanese photographer Michio Hoshino ... and it's revealed at the end of the book that Michio was killed by a bear in Alaska. He was newly married and just had a baby boy. He looked and sounded like a genuinely nice guy.

Here is what one reviewer on Amazon wrote about it. It sums up how I feel:

"A wonderful story of friendship, loss, growth, introspection, wilderness, devastation, change, art -- all the facets of life that make our lives poignant, painful and ultimately worthwhile. It's also a beautifully written homage to Michio Hoshino, the nature photographer, who slowly brings Schooler out of his shell to rediscover himself. Only then is Schooler able to look back at his life's events and work through them, to face his own loneliness. Other reviewers may be disappointed by this book but they did not read it for its OWN merits. So what if it doesn't mimic other books about Alaska? It's not supposed to and it shouldn't. This is its own book, its own story. Well worth reading. Lynn is a fascinating person, an excellent writer. Wherever you are, Lynn, you have a fan on the other side of the country who wishes you hope and happiness."

I also just finished this, and enjoyed it very much. What a devious, detailed mind some people have!

"Social Crimes" by Jane Stanton Hitchcock.

Here's a review on Amazon:

"How does Hitchcock's amusing saga differ from the scads of books involving money, murder and high society? There's the economy and wit of her prose ("murder was never my goal in life," heroine Jo Slater begins), and then there's Jo's awareness of how silly the upper crust is ("if you're nice and you lose all your money, you're out. But if you're a sh-t with a private plane, you're in"). Playing on the tried and true theme of the older wife being dumped for the young miss, Hitchcock (Trick of the Eye) offers a funny, lightweight tale. Jo is living the life: she's married to a billionaire, owns a sumptuous apartment in Manhattan, a rambling home in the Hamptons and a magnificent collection of 18th-century art. Things are just perfect until pretty young thing Monique de Passy enters her world (seemingly as a friend), Jo's husband dies, and Jo learns that he's left his estate to none other than the charming French countess. What follows and constitutes the bulk of the book is Jo's attempt to frame Monique as a seductress and murderer. Her approach is, for the most part, honorable. Jo is smart and has plenty of connections, and even though her financial situation becomes dire after her husband's death (she takes cabs instead of limousines and wears old couture dresses to parties), she holds her head high and eventually triumphs. Hitchcock's prose is airy and her plot moves quickly, making this a quintessential beach book."

I have recently read a good book which is a kind of murder mystery called DEAD SLEEP, By Greg Iles. I really enjoyed it. Also just finished Nora Roberts DANCE UPON THE AIR, a story about a woman seeking a new life escaping an abusive husband. It has an interesting twist, as she is a witch.
I am now reading Tom Clancy's THE TEETH OF THE TIGER, a novel about terrorists and dealing with them. At the same time I am reading Tony Hillerman's THE SINISTER PIG, a police/murder mystery with the same law enforcement group that were in the last book I read by him.
Thanks for the great ideas for books to read. I intend to look up some of them.

You're reading TWO books at once? That's just not right!

I read one book by Tony Hillerman. I think it was called "The Wailing Wind", and I just couldn't get into it. It didn't flow for me.

If you like mysteries, have you ever read anything by Harlan Coben? He's very, very good. I especially liked "Tell No One", which was very suspenseful.

For light, quick reading, every book I've read by Jane Heller so far has been great.

And don't forget "The Boy Next Door" by Meggin Cabot. It's hilarious! You can read some of the text here:

Then click on "See all 10 sample pages". This is a neat feature I just noticed on Amazon, and I really like it.

I haven't started yet, but I just received "Who's Looking Out for You?" by Bill O'Reilly. His radio program is very fascinating so I'm anxious to read the book.

I have to admit. I cheat. I read one book at night and for brief times during the day and I listen to another one while I walk or run errands in the car.

Right now I'm reading the second in a set of three vampire books by Charlaine Harris . They are very funny and a whole new spin on the vamp story. When I finish them I'm going to read
The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon .

I am currently reading a book called "Rocket City" by Cathryn Alpert. I picked it up during my search for books to sell. It caught my eye and I have almost read the whole book in 3 days. The line on the back........."Three melons and a dwarf sat in the back seat of Marilee's '72 dodge, but the cop was not amused."........really drew me in! LOL It is an odd, alluring book. I am really enjoying it.
