Red face Does your town have free concerts on the Green in the summer?

We just went to a free concert tonight, next town up from us. The group was Long Island Sound. They played music from the 40's to present, mostly pop tunes. Of course I love K.C. & The Sunshine Band, they played a song by them. Afterwards we went to Dairy Queen for hot fudge sundaes. A man standing in front of us asked us if it was always that busy there. The parking lot was so full that there were cars double parked, and others waiting for spaces. He was from Florida, said he loved our weather, that it is so hot in Florida right now. It is actually very cool here tonight.

Thumbs up free concerts

most metro areas have at least a few events like this during summer. In fact, often times efforts are made to show a diverse line up of various musical acts, not mtv/radio crap.
One of the larger, more famous ones is the July 4th free concerts in Phoenix. They actually have big name people. I saw Dwight Yoakam for free there. And some big cities, in the financial district there is the "brown bag" concerts during lunch hour in a plaza or park

Van Wert, Ohio, has free "Concerts in the Park" every summer, sponsored by the Van Wert County Foundation. This summer, so far they've had The Lima Symphony Orchestra, The 122nd Ohio Army National Guard Band, and the U.S. Air Force “Band of Flight.”

In our little town we have a farmer's market, kids' activities and a concert every Friday night in the summer. Just local bands and acts.

there's no reason to always shop at malls and chain stores. I agree some downtown/historic districts have tight parking, but usually there are cheap parking decks, or strip malls a short walk from the main district where you can park for free. If you don't have a car, get a ride downtown.

Parking is free everywhere in Van Wert. Even on the street. No meters. No paid lots. Just free. Ahhhh, the joys of a small town.

Another concert last night.........

Quote:

For anyone who ever watched a John Ford-John Wayne Western or dreamed of being Woody the Cowboy in Toy Story, listening to Riders in the Sky was a treat beyond compare. A large crowd estimated at over 1,000 people that nearly filled Fountain Park dodged raindrops for a chance to hear the cowboy quartet and the Riders didn't disappoint. Ranger Doug (Idol of American Youth), Woody Paul (King of the Cowboy Fiddlers), Too Slim (enough said) and Cowpolka King Joey mixed instrumental virtuosity, oh-so-tight harmonies and plenty of down-home slapstick humor into a celebration of the singing cowboy music made famous by groups like The Sons of the Pioneers.

The Grammy- and Oscar-winning group showed that they were masters of the Western music genre, delighting their audience with old favorites as well as their rendition of "Woody's Roundup" from Pixar's "Toy Story 2." Crowd participation was also the order of the day as audience members wahooed, yelled and clapped and some lucky children got their chance to perform with the "Riders." The performance, one of the Summer Concert in the Park Series sponsored by The Van Wert County Foundation, was a rip-roarin' adventure for all who came. And why not? After all, that's The Cowboy Way.

Yah I sure do miss that sometimes. However, I don't miss having to drive FOREVER to go to Burger King!

I went from a population of 300+ to 80268+ (Fort Smith AR) then 45504+ (Joplin MO) (according to the 2000 census).

rualakin is an unknown quantity
Our park district puts on "concerts in the park" as well. Tonight friends and their kids and us and our kids went to see "Satin Love Orchestra" a local Eugene DISCO band LOL!! They are very very popular and were very entertaining! All that gold and silver "lame" (lamae? dunno how its spelled and it looks lamer spelled than it is LOL!!!!) and even a purple velvet top hat LOL!! I had heard about these folks from many many people and they are on the local television here a great deal, but I had never heard them perform until tonight! The kids are so into that disco stuff now with all the "retro" and so it was sooooooooo funny to see them "gettin down" with the old fogies lol!!! Oh and watching several hundred folks on blankets and lawn chairs doing the hand motions to YMCA was probably my favorite part! GIGGLES!!!!

We have the High Noon Tunes here in Portland at Pioneer Square (dubbed "Portland's Living Room"). Mostly local talent, but a great way to spend your lunch hour if you work downtown (like me!)
