| Moving to the country....internet access??
We are moving to Oakland, NE in a few weeks. Basically the middle of nowhere, but I'm wondering what we can do for internet access! The people there told us about Alltel. Alltell has a dial up number for 402-685-something, and out phone # is 402-685-somthing, yet when I called they said I'm sorry we don't offer internet access for you number?? I'm totally confused. We had wanted to get high speed internet access, but then realized that no one offers it way out in the country? Does AOL, Earthlink, do they offer access in very rural places?? I just don't know what to do...I'm starting to get a little worried about this whole "living in the county." What about a house fire?? Ambulance?? Heck we have to burn our own garbage!! We've been living in Chicago for 5 years so this is a HUGE change, so just wondering if any of you live in the country or rural areas and just have any experiences. __________________ [Only registered and activated users can see links. I've lived in the country all my life. I understand your concern, but try to embrace those wonderful aspects of it, and try to adjust to the inconveniences. I have wireless internet, which I just got a couple of months ago, after having dial-up for 6 years. Ask your neighbors (yep, the ones that live half a mile down the road...LOL) what choices you have, but if you can get a satellite dish, such as Direct TV, you can have high-speed internet access through them (it's called DirectWay). You may be surprised at your options, but you'll just have to ask around. You'll love the quiet, but you'll love the 'noise,' too. Frogs, crickets, etc. The smells will be different (and better, I'm betting ).I'm sure you'll have ambulance service (it might be a local town's EMS or even the local funeral home that provides that service), and if there is a fire, the local fire department has it all worked out. No fire hydrants? I'll bet there's a suitable body of water nearby. Their trucks have water in them all ready to go, and they know where to get more. You might have some local regulations concerning open burning, but yes, you'll be able to do that. We burn SOME things, but we have a trash pick-up service once a week. Again, ask around. I'm in about as rural of an area as you can get, and we have access to pretty much everything. It just may take a little longer to get to it, or be a little more inconvenient, but like I said, hopefully you'll think the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. Feel free to ask whatever you need to, and we 'country bumpkins' will try to help! Good luck, and welcome to 'God's Country!' ![]() __________________ [Only registered and activated users can see links. Is this rural enough for you? This is an aerial view of where I live. Our house is 2 3/8 inches from the right edge of the photo, and 1 inch from the bottom. ![]() [Only registered and activated users can see links. Looks like Earthlink has two local access numbers for you. One is a Lyons number, and the other is a West Point number. __________________ [Only registered and activated users can see links. Either login above or Register Now]

Here's an aerial photo, taken in 1994, of our house. The road going through the middle of photo, on the right, we are the first house; with the tiny little pull off driveway. A little over 2 inches in from right, and about an inch up from the bottom. [Only registered and activated users can see links. My nephew lives in the Wisconsin 'boonies' and, unfortunately all he can get is AOL. Ugh!!! If Earthlink is there, by all means I would suggest you go with them. ![]() __________________ [Only registered and activated users can see links. Either login above or Register Now] |

I have used a small local provider for years. My little town didn't have any local access numbers with any of the big guys, so that was my only option when I first went online. I am unsure now if I could get it with a larger company (AOL, Earthlink etc) if I didn't have area calling. You might check that out. Try checking the yellow pages for internet services in the area you are moving to. I love the service I get with them. I can call even when I just have computer questions plus I NEVER get a busy signal! ![]() __________________ Check out these [Only registered and activated users can see links.
