Baffled needs tips on Supermarket shopping

It seems like I spend more money at the darn supermarket than any where else in my budget....we are desperately trying to save for a home of our own...we have finally paid off all our credit cards....now only owe the dentist....every time I get my paycheck, I work partime while my two kids are in school.....it all goes to food....what is my problem...I cut the coupons out that I use......but I always end up spending about 100 or more a week.....any tips would be helpful

Do you make a list of the meals you want for the week before you go?

Do you have a Walmart Neighborhood store or Walmart Supercenter near you? Their prices are quite a bit lower than my local Albertsons so you might save some money there. For example:

Yoplait yogurt: ALB 69 cents WM 54 cents
Kashi cereal ALB $3.49 WM $2.24
Healthy Choice Frozen Dinners ALB $3.99 WM $2.49- $2.99
Fresh Pineapple ALB $4.99 WM $2.99

Check out the prices to make sure yours are as low as ours are! I think the Target Supercenters also have some pretty good grocery prices.

Aaaaargh! This site is ticking me off, first it messes up my post and now it won't let me edit it.

Try doing a search for grocery or groceries in the Frugal Living Forum and you will surely get some good ideas, for example:

I'm lucky because I have two stores near me that double coupons up to $.50 and they both also offer half off items. I shop the sales with coupons and stockpile. I almost never pay full price for anything except milk and bread. Also if you have a Dollar General or similar store nearby they have very good deals on some grocery items, for example cookies and crackers for $1 a pack as opposed to $2.69 or so in the grocery store.

I spend roughly $100 a week...there are 5 of us and it does include detergents, paper products, personals and such. One thing I know to do...EAT BEFORE SHOPPING! LOL! I also refuse to buy certain things if they don't have that little sales tag...LOL! Like cereal!! Kids know if I don't have a coupon or the sales tag isn't there, we're not getting it. I stock up also a lot. When I find a good deal I spend the extra $$ during that trip because it WILL save money during future trips. You have to have the space tho, DH and I figured it was well worth buying our freezers (1 chest and 1 stand-up) I rarely buy snacks either...like the Little Debbie cakes and such...just cheaper to make something (cake, brownies, etc..). A couple of times a year I stock up on canned veggies also. It's sickening at times to see my grocery bill..LOL! I am getting off really cheap tho considering I have three growing sons and a hubby that can really pack it away...LOL!

"Do you make a list of the meals you want for the week before you go?"

This is exactly what I do. I check out the sales flyer, and plan my meals according to what is on sale (esp. the meats). Then I make my list from what my meals are going to be for the week. I pretty much stick to this. I do not buy to many other items that are not needed for my meal unless it is a necessity. I buy all of my "paper products" and some other big grocery items (i.e. coffee, soups, pasta..etc..). At BJs, my local wholesale club. My weekly groceries for a family of 5 is usually about $60 per week. My monthly wholesale puchases are usually around $150 - $200 (this is including a months worth of diapers and diaper wipes for two). This still rounds my groceries out to an average of under $100 per week. Not to bad for five people. I will say it took a lot of discipline. It seemed like I could never get my grocery bill down below $125 per week, without counting my wholesale trip. Now I don't know what I would ever do without planning my meals ahead of time.

The prices must be MUCH HIGHER around here 'cause I spend well over $100 each and every week (that's including my coupons, etc). And I'm a GOOD shopper, saved $70+ today as a matter of fact!
I do buy everything at one store, can't be 'bothered' schlepping from one store to another........

The Dollar General and Family Dollar stores around here now accept manufacturer's coupons for items they carry... Can equal some good deals on a few items... They do not carry that many name brand items.

Hey how about growing some of the veggies yourself in a garden? And canning or freezing them?

Mouse, DS knows that if there is something in particular that he wants, it HAS to have the sale tag on the shelf! He'll even come up to me and ask if I have a coupon for it! LOL I'm teaching him to pinch his pennies!!!

I try to stock up on things when I find a great deal, usually it's on sale and I have coupons/double coupons. Flash will ask; "Why are there 12 bottles of shampoo in the cupboard???" And I'll say; "It was on sale and I got double coupons! " And he knows to stop right there unless he wants a "play by play" of my "find of the day"!!! LOL

Ohhhhh how I'd love to get an "extra" freezer... But we live in a little bitty place, so all I want to get is one of those "mini" upright freezers... We've only got three people here so we don't need too much extra freezer space.

My usual grocery bill is about $100 - $150 every two weeks, and that's for a family of 4, two large dogs and one cat (so the bill includes pet food and treats), plus, I'm pregnant and eating much more than usual! LOL! I do my main grocery shopping at the Walmart Supercenter, which is about 40 minutes away from here. The amount I save there well makes up for the extra gas I use getting there and back. Then we buy milk on an as needed basis at our local grocery store or at the regular Walmart store whenever possible (that walmart is about 20 minutes away).

(breaking my post up so maybe it won't be get all messed up.. I hope! )

(my post - part 2 )

About the best advice I can give you is to:

#1 - shop at Walmart if possible

#2 - find a staple food that you can do a lot of different things with that's pretty cheap, not bad for you, and fills you up. (mine is whole chickens, pasta and potatoes)

#3 - skip the canned/boxed/frozen meals if you can. Those are expensive and you can usually make it yourself for cheaper.

#4 - forget the frozen pizzas and make it yourself. I got my Pizza dough recipe from [Only registered and activated users can see links. Either login above or Register Now] It takes a little more effort than the frozen pizzas, but it's amazingly simple and once you get the hang of it (took me two times), it's so easy you'll wonder why you ever bothered paying so much for the frozen ones. You can also make extra dough and freeze it for next time, but honestly, it only takip the canned/boxed/frozen meals if you can. Those are expensive and you can usually make it yourself for cheaper.

Giant Eagle has 2% milk for $1.68 a gallon this week

We don't use a lot of milk.

Our "average" monthly grocery bills are around $300... 2 adults, 1 almost 8 yo boy, and 2 doggies
