No checking account

I'm not being judgemental... but I'm surprised about something.

Someone I know emailed me that they sent in a money order for a payment on such and such.

I replied: "why not use your checking account to pay?"

They replied: "I only use cash, money orders, or credit card - I don't like checking."

Question is: Why would this be. I'd like all opinions and ideas as to what would be the reasoning or cause. Thanks!

I know people that aren't very good with keeping track of their finances. They do not know how to balance a checkbook. Mainly because no one ever taught them how. (I think that this is something that they should teach in school.)

Some people just like to use credit cards because they know they have X amount of credit and they just add up their spending till it gets close to that limit. Subtaracting payments on your bill is not very hard.

With a checking account you most likely also have a debit card which just adds to the "confusion" of numbers to figure out. You have to keep track of the checks, and debits... It's just too much bother for some people.

I hope this makes a little sense, it's kind of hard to explain...

I have a friend that does not have a checking account for the same reasons Beffie described. Every time she has had one (and she is in her 30s so she's had a few) she ends up closing it because it is so out of balance. I can't understand it either. I am just like you, Toby Lee. If it doesn't balance to the penny each month, it drives me crazy till it does! I can't understand the trouble of getting money orders all the time, as well as the expense, but it works for some people, I guess.

I don't even have to 'balance my checkbook' once a month anymore. I check my acct. online and make sure everything is accurate and corresponds........
This way, it ALWAYS perfect!

Hey- I took it to mean that they don't like using checking account information to pay for something. I had someone steal our account number and my identity from a check I wrote somewhere. They made fake checks and wrote out over $15K in a weekend. It was a nightmare.

Of course we all know you are safe!

Some people don't have a checking account because they bounced too many checks and they aren't allowed to have one anymore.

also, if you have a checking account and you have debtors chasing you, they can garnish your account...

I do the same thing..I haven't balanced a checkbook in years....I know what I send out and I check online and can see just what I have left...I learned to balance a checkbook in class in high school but I don't even have to bother anymore....I LOVE online banking and wouldn't have it any other way.

Also to get a checking account they check your credit- bad credit, no account....

Checks are getting harder to use thesedays too. Many restaurants won't even take them any more. For the longest time my brother only dealt in cash - using money orders for his bills. But he decided in order to ever get a house or a car loan, he should have a credit history, so he has checking and uses credit cards now.

When I do eBay, trade, auction transactions I don't use my checking account either. MO can be tracked if need be.
