Too funny! From the title of your thread I go "ah ha... I know just what she'd love"

then I see your post and crack up.

I was going to suggest Mexican Saltillo tile!

I installed that in my entire house, patio, front porch - everything from laundry room to bathroom and everything inbetween.

I left carpet in the bedrooms but I love the Saltillo tile. So easy to clean. I didn't put any gloss on it, because I have it inside and out and wanted a matching look. Just use the penetrating sealer once a year.

We have a butt ugly kitchen floor. It looks like something a mason would put down, and it was a mason who built our house. It's so old, I wish we could re-do our kitchen but the economy is really bad here, more companies are laying off, so we have put that on hold. My sister just got a new kitchen floor, black and white. She said, never again, the white part of the floor has to be cleaned daily.

I am having a new porcelain one put down....it looked fantastic in the showroom so hopefully it will look great here too. We are having the whole kitchen gutted and the floor will match the backsplash, a granite counter top, some walls taken down adn moved and recessed lighting put in, all new stainless appliances..the works!

I have hardwood- It SUCKS!!!!!!! Sorry, my kids are just slobs, and they do a poor job of cleaning up anything they spill, as it is so hard for them to see. To see anything sticky, I have to turn my head on an angle with the light hitting it just right to see what I am looking at. ANd when I sweep, tiny particles get stuck inbetween the slats.

I guess if you have no kids and the floor is sealed by a professional, it wouldnt be so bad.

Also, if a can falls on it, it dings, if you have a leak in your dishwasher it can ruin your floor.

We just got new vinyl in the kitchen and I love it. Actually, not "just", it really was done in January. It looks like Granite stone tiles, in fact many people reach down to touch it to see if it is. Hides everything, super easy to clean.

I have simple vinyl flooring...white...and I hate it. It was here when we moved in and looked pretty nice 6 yrs ago. The combination of 5 kids and white has been very tough. Plus we are definitely a shoe wearing family in the house...at least on the vinyl. I am considering ceramic tile in some earth tones...
I don't think wood would be any better with these spillin' and ignorin' the spill kids.

We have an off-white vinyl on our kitchen now, and unlike the others, I like it. The white makes the room look bigger, plus it is not really that bad to keep clean. Dark colors will show every "footprint" of the kids shoes, which are usually full of sand. Will have to veto the hardwood in the kitchen, we have it in all the other rooms but kitchen and bathroom. I would imagine it would be a pain in those rooms. Like mayfly suggested, the granite and stone pattern vinyl are good as they don't show every little thing on the floor. We had it on the floor before but I could not find the color I wanted in the quality I wanted when we remodeled so we went with the white. Just make sure it is something that you really like.

Laminate flooring-the only way to go. We have our entire main floor done in it. Ours is Pergo, but I honestly think they wear all the same. You can do it yourself too. They have the new snap-loc kind that you don't even have to glue and clamp. Oh, I love our floor...we have two little kids and three cats. I have had this flooring since my 6 year old was a baby and think it's the best thing I have ever had done.

You can get the traditional wood, or they have those beautiful new laminate 12 X 12 tiles that look like stone...etc. We are going to do our upstairs bath and some other areas with that.

Another thing I love that most people aren't going to put in their house is a colored concrete floor with high gloss finish...LOL.

thanks guys!

all input is so helpful. toby, i do love the mediteranean feel of the saltillo. ours is a little domed, though, and having 3 yr old and 10 month old means that 50% of meals end up being ground into the grout. then the only way to clean it is to get down on my knees and scrub. so it's a quality of life issue. april gail - too funny. you and i are on the same life track, aren't we? i'm redoing our whole kitchen, too. (got our wall moved last week while we were on vacation. LOVE it!) did you check out ebay for granite? i'm so on the fence. i want it, but don't want to plunk down $4 grand. i think i could get it installed for half that if i bought on ebay. what are you doing there? bestmidwest - i've heard the pergo can be a nightmare if not installed meticulously. is that not your experience? 3tbear, i got that advice early ("don't do black and white tile!!"). lol. the laminate stone or granite look vinyl may be the direction i'll take. funny how we got the original estimate for $10 grand (and that includes cabinets at close to cost from our buddy in that business)and that's getting close to doubling now.... i'd BETTER love it when it's done!! paula.
