Teachers Pay

Got in an email!!

Tired of Those High Paid Teachers!

I, for one, am sick and tired of those high paid teachers. Their hefty
salaries are driving up taxes, and they only work 9 or 10 months a year!
It's time we put things in perspective and pay them for what they do, baby
sit! We can get that for less than minimum wage. That's right? I would
give them $3.00 an hour and only the hours they worked, not any silly
planning time. That would be $15.00 a day. Each parent should pay $15.00
a day for these teachers to baby-sit their children. Now, how many do they
teach in a day? .... maybe 25. Then that's 15 x $25 =$375.00 a day.
But remember they only work 180 days a year! I'm not going to pay them for
any vacations. Let's see? that's $375 x 180 = $67,500.00. .

Hold on, my calculator must need batteries!)

What about those special teachers or the ones with Masters Degrees?
Well, we could pay them minimum wage just to be that fair. Let's round it
off to $6.00 an hour. That would be $6.00 times five hours times 25
children times 180 days = $135,000.00 per year.
Wait a minute, there's something wrong here!!!!

There sure is, huh??!!!!

Send this to any teachers YOU may know. I'm sure they'd
gladly accept babysitting rates!

US Teacher Salaries

In 1999-2000, the average teacher salary was $41,820. This is a 3.2 percent increase over the previous year and among the lowest hikes in 40 years. In the previous survey for 1998-99, teachers earned an average increase of 3 percent.

Connecticut had the nation's top average teacher salary at $52,410. The other highest-paying states were New York, at $51,020; New Jersey, at $50,878; Michigan, at $48,729; Pennsylvania, at $48,321; and Washington, D.C., at $48,304.

South Dakota paid the lowest average teacher salary at $29,072. The other states at the bottom of the list were Oklahoma, at $29,525; North Dakota, at $29,863; Mississippi, at $31,897; and Montana, at $32,121. Puerto Rico was dead last at $24,980.

States in New England, the Mideastern region, and the Far West reported the highest average salaries, while states in the Southwest and the Southeastern regions had the lowest.

Texas (ranked 27th) reported the highest average salary increase at 9.4 percent. Just three other states posted increases above 6 percent: Mississippi (ranked 48th), 7.9 percent; North Carolina (ranked 23rd), 6.8 percent; and the state of Washington (ranked 20th), 6.1 percent.

New Jersey and Pennsylvania experienced declines in average salary, -1.2 percent and -0.3 percent, respectively, primarily due to the retirement of experienced teachers. Thirteen states reported increases of less than 2 percent.

The $41,820 average teacher salary continued to lag behind the average annual wages of other white-collar occupations. For instance, an attorney earned an average of $77,150; an engineer brought home $72,427; a computer systems analyst earned $66,849; a buyer/contract specialist earned $57,035; while an accountant earned $52,323.

Maren, I can't believe that school insulted you with such a low salary! That is considered poverty level in many states. I wonder how you are going to live on that????

The school is going through a huge budget crunch right now. Since its a private christian school, it is attached to the church. The church has been having financial problems and been taking money from the school (when it should be the other way around).

I will be working hourly on top of the salary every day in the administration offices as well, to pull in some more income. I figure I have lived on half that, and have made it. It will all work out. I just have to think positive! At least I have a job that pays me!

Thanks for all of the great info...I am in a teacher certification program right now, and it's costing me a bundle (totally worth it). I think the decision to teach is a very individual one. I think that the salary and benefits can vary greatly, even from district to district. Now, the program that I am in to get certified for elementary ed takes 18 months + 14 weeks of student teaching. This is for people who already have at least a B.A. in another subject. So, just imagine, these folks already went to school, and are now paying well over 25k just so they can teach your kids. My starting salary should be somewhere around 32k. Some of the districts don't have any money to offer insurance anymore...that's cool with me because I think if I had another insurance it would screw up my Tricare benefits royally (hubby's military). The last job I was in...as a sales assistant (very easy job, I basically bought beer for the company and typed up some memos), I made well over 42k. I left that job because I couldn't afford to work and pay daycare. As a teacher, I can be around when my kids are and spend summers with them...so it all works for me!

In my state, as in many others, we are required to complete our master's degree or equivalent graduate level credits in order to continue teaching at some point (I think it's 5 years out). There are compensation levels for that continued education built in. It's a fairly stable environment once you are tenured, unlike some corporate environments I've seen. For me, it's worked out perfectly. I think a lot of it depends on where you live and if you are the sole provider or a supplemental one. I am really excited about beginning to teach, and also to continue my education. I think that people need to realize too that many teachers (but not all) spend a lot of time outside of school hours not only grading papers, but designing lesson plans and curriculum that will stimulate and challenge our kids to succeed.

Seeing as it's Teacher Appreciation Week, I think this message is very timely. Thanks so much to Freesurfer, and also thanks to the private and preschool/daycare teachers who get paid practically nothing for taking care of our littlest students. If your students have a good teacher, make sure to thank them!
