Baffled Computer help? Please! Kernel32dll error

I'm online at my sister's, because we can't navigate online on our computer. The night before last our computer was working just fine, we turned it off... Yesterday morning when I turned it on and went online, I got "...KERNEL32DLL error has occurred and internet explorer will now close..." So all day yesterday, and most of today, we have not been able to navigate online!!! ARGH!!!

This is what happens:
1. Open internet explorer = fine
2. Goes to our homepage (roadrunner) = fine
3. Can go to any other webpage (DealOfDay, Yahoo, Ebay, etc.) = fine
4. BUT when we try to go to a third webpage/same window... we get the Kernel32DLL error message??? And IE closes.

It says if problems persist try restarting computer, tried multiple times. Ran matenance wizard (scan disk, defrag, etc) did not help...

Anyone have any idea how to fix this? I can't find anything pertaining to this specific error at [Only registered and activated users can see links. Either login above or Register Now] ...

HELP PLEASE!!!!

We used to get that ALL the time with our old Compaq. Had sooooo many problems toward the end, ended up just getting a new one
DID get a new hard drive though and putting that 'puter in the boys room.

Let me see what I can find out....maybe Charlie will be able to remember what caused that.

Thanks Naiomi! Hopefully some of this will help!

Freesurfer, I'd try Netscape if it's even on our computer??? I'll have to look when I get home... I know when our local library used Netscape there were a lot of pages that I couldn't get to load??? Don't know why? Every time I tried to access DealOfDay there, the computer would freeze up, and I would have to quietly and quickly have to CTRL + ALT + DEL to end task and go back into Netscape... SHHH!!! Don't tell them, cause you aren't allowed to do that at the libray. You have to ask a librarian to help you.

Hope to get this fixed ASAP, I think I'm having internet withdrawal... especially since I'm now used to our "new" Roadrunner service, and I'm using my sister's r-e-a-l-l-y-s-l-o-w dial up!!! LOL

Well, I've got to head home now... If I can't get it fixed I'll be back at my sister's tomorrow... So if anyone else can offer any advice PLEASE do!

Thank you!!!

There are some downloads here from Microsoft, I have had to download some of the patches in the past. Maybe this will help

Chatter box

Well, so far I can't fix our computer problem... But I sort of put a Band-Aid on it... Thanks for the idea Freesurfer!!!

I installed/setup Netscape Navigator; then downloaded the "current" version 7.02... hope that doesn't turn out to be a mistake. So far I'm able to navigate online okay, hope it keeps working. But the differences between IE and Netscape, WOW! It feels so weird! LOL But it's working! That's what counts.

If I can find where our cd's are, I'm gonna reformat the hard drive. Think that would work. We've had this computer since December 2000, and have never reformatted the hard drive. I think a "tune up" is long overdue.

The cause of this message is a damaged password list file (.pwl).To fix it;

Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files Or Folders.

In the Named box, type *.pwl, and then click Find Now.

In the list of found files, right-click each file, and then click Delete.

Repeat this step until all of the .pwl files are deleted.

On the File menu, click Close.

Restart the computer. The password list files are re-created
automatically when you log on to Windows.

PWL file contains valuable information like dial-up and network passwords. Once they are deleted windows will create new ones.
