Do you read to your kids before they sleep?

I am in a great habit of reading to my youngest 2 (6 and 10) who share a room....so that helps. There are nights that I'm busy or tired, but almost every night we read at least a chapter of a book. My poor little 6 yr old rarely gets a picture book read because I am always reading something that the 10 yr old will like, too. It has been very nice for all of us. Surprisingly enough the 6 yr old always remembers what we had read the night before and will summarize it if we can't remember! lol

Another surprising thing is that they like most anything even if it is a story about a girl. We have read many of the Beverly Cleary books mainly because my older kids had them already. The boys like the Ramona books as well as the Henry ones. Today we started the Laura Ingalls Wilder books. We have read a variety this year, but it seems that most are older books that I read when I was a kid.

I read one book with a football theme. It was the worst read aloud book I have ever come across. ICK! There were so many names and what each position was and the whole play by play thing.

I would be interested in what you are reading to your kids especially grade schoolers.

I ALWAYS read to my girls before they went to sleep. We have all the Ramona books, and we all loved those. They are now 23 and 20, so I don't read to them anymore.

They also enjoyed the Alex books by Nancy Levene:

"Peanut Butter and Jelly Secrets"
"French Fry Forgiveness"
"Mint Cookie Miracles"
"Cherry Cola Champions"
"Hot Chocolate Friendship"
"Shoelaces and Brussels Sprouts"
"Apple Turnover Treasure"

You may have tangible wealth untold;
Caskets of jewels and coffers of gold.
Richer than I you can never be -
I had a Mother who read to me.

I used to read to my DD everynight.
Then we just got out of the habit.
She enjoys reading so much though that she reads by herself when she has free time to do so.

She likes the Bunicula(sp) books. And the Ramona books as well.

The ones shes been reading on her own are The Boxcar Children books.

We sould get back into the habit of reading together again.
I miss it.

Does reading the "Riot Act" count??? LOL!
We don't read while they're in bed...we do read just about everyday together. A lot of times Codey is reading his "Keep Books" (school) to us (Dad, older bro or myself) every night.

Baby is 17 now, but I always did read to them and they all became great readers...I think the two are associated.

When my girls were younger we would read everyday...after school, after dinner and before bed. We would bring home stacks of books from the library, mainly picture books. We'd really get into acting out the story and soon they wanted to read to me. Now that they are older (16 & 14) they always have a book handy and most of the time they read instead of watch TV.

I read to Bronson a few times a week (he's 3). I'm looking forward to when I can read books to him that have chapters! LOL

I use to read to them but not very often anymore. :-( We are so busy anymore everyone is tired and ready for bed at night! Sometimes hubby will read to the kids though. Every now and then you can catch him in there reading a book to them. :-)

My son is 21 months and we read Goodnight Moon every single night to him before bed. It is a routine now and he LOVES it. Sometimes we throw in an extra book before GOodnight Moon, like 5 Little Monkeys

I always used to read to the boys too. they like to read quietly to themselves now.

Wynken Blynken & Nod was their favorite.

Wynken Blynken & Nod, one night sailed off in a wooden shoe. Off on a river of misty light into a sea of dew............I can't believe I still remember it!!

Hand, Hand, Fingers, Thumb is a Dr. Seuss book. We had a huge variety of children's books, but they LOVED the Dr. Seuss books. I think it was the silly rhymes..........

Here's another one they loved:

The Cozy Book by Mary Ann Hoberman

It's fun for kids, because of the rhythm and rhyming, and fun for adults to read, for the same reasons.

Publisher's Weekly:
Skillfully constructed rhymes and tender, tidily detailed watercolors point out to children all the ``cozy doings'' of ``a very cozy day,'' from the time ``you wake up bright and early/ In your roasty toasty bed'' all the way to bedtime. Hoberman names cozy things to eat, cozy smells and sounds (``The gurgle that a gargle makes/ The giggle when a tickle takes''), cozy words (``Pachysandra/ Sarsaparilla/ Tusk and smug and fog/ Galoshes''), etc. Fraser, who teamed with Hoberman for A House Is a House for Me, illustrates specific entries on Hoberman's list and also sets whole scenes that embrace a number of ``cozy'' activities. Her world is a bright one-characters are inevitably rosy-cheeked, their clothes festively patterned, their houses and schoolrooms and playgrounds definitely lived-in. Despite some precious phrases, the message here is thoroughly childhood-affirming. A good choice for lap-time sharing. Ages 4-7.
