What we've decided to do ......

I think instead of buying end of the year gifts for the teachers at nursery school we're going to write them a check

As many of you know, Matthew's 5 yr old best friend, David passed away in October <sniff>. The school is going to begin construction on a gorgeous play area in the very near future(cannot even begin to tell you what this baby is gonna cost, WOW).
The school has already decided to dedicate a small area in David's memory (he and Matthew were in the same class there last year, Matthew stayed on another year). They want to create a butterfly garden and put a bench with an engraved plaque.

After David passed the school sent home a lovely 'memorial flyer', it mentioned that any donations would be greatly appreciated and would go towards his butterfly garden.

We haven'tbeen able to donate anything YET (we were waiting for our tax refund) but I had a thought.......
How about if in lieu of end- of- the- year gifts for the teachers (there's about 4-5 teachers I'd need to buy for) we were to donate say $100?
Maybe we could even pay for the engraved plaque that will go on the park bench?
Anyone have an idea of how much that would run?

The way I look at it, I'd much rather see our money go to that.....
instead of buying some lil 'trinkets' for the teachers that they could care less about.
Given our current financial situation, we're simply unable to do both (make a donation AND buy gifts)

What do you think? Should I approach them (the staff and I are on very good terms, I'm on the Parent's Advisory Board) and ask about the plaque? Think it'll be outta our price range? Should I just give them a check to use towards the play area (in David's memory)?

Sorry for rambling..........
Naomi

That's a great idea!!!!! Don't know the best way for you to do it, but I think it is very thoughtful

I'd go for it. After Tristan passed away in October (my buddy from work) we retired our flag and had a glass case made for it with "In Memory Of Tristan David" on it. It was something we are very proud of having displayed on our wall at work...it's a nice reminder of him and it made us all feel special knowing we had did that for him.

I'm sure the teachers would think it was a wonderful idea!

I think I would write a letter to each of the teachers explaining what you are doing and that you are doing it in their name. That way you get two honors for the price of one. No need to mention the dollar amount to them. Just say that "in lieu of an appreciation gift, a donation has been made to the David memorial in your name."

Has any one told you today that you are a sweetheart? Well I just did!

<sniff>
Thank you all for the advice and kind words! Much appreciated!
((((((hugs))))))

David's mom and sister, Caitlin (4) came over this afternoon. I had a lil something I wanted to give Caitlin for Easter
Matthew and Caitlin played beautifully together, they had sooo much fun. When it came time for Caitlin and her mom to leave she gave Matthew lots of hugs. <sniff>
Jessa (her mom) and I got warm fuzzies
I told her that I was sure David was looking down and smiling.

Matthew inherited many of David's things (his bike that was used just once, TONS of clothes, etc).
Recently, I told Matthew that the shirt he had on used to belong to David. He pulled it up to his nose and said "Ahhhhhh, it smells like David"
<sniff> Moments like that (when he feels close to David) warm my heart!
Amazing what an impact that lil boy had on us...........

Naomi
