Another computer ?? I can't open attachments!

Anytime anyone sends me an attachment, it won't let me open it. When I click on the paper clip, the attachment file is listed, but it's grayed out, so I can't open it.

Now WHERE do I go to change whatever setting makes it this way?

Re: Another computer ?? I can't open attachments!

I'm assuming you're using Outlook Express. Have you tried lowering the security settings? If too high then it will protect you from unsafe attachments.

To set security zones

In Outlook Express, security zones enable you to choose whether or not active content, such as ActiveX Controls and scripts, can be run from inside HTML e-mail messages. You can choose a moderate security level that allows most active content to run, or you can choose a more restrictive security level.

In Outlook Express: On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Security tab.
In the Security Zones section, choose an Internet Explorer security zone:
Choose Internet zone for standard use. It is used by a majority of Outlook Express users.
Choose Restricted sites zone to create a more secure environment.

Note

You can adjust the security level of these and other zones in Internet Explorer. The security settings that you make in Internet Explorer also apply to Outlook Express. In Internet Explorer, on the Tools menu, click Internet Options, and then adjust your settings on the Security tab.

Why when I try to open an attachement is it greyed out and I can't open it?

A common problem when using Microsoft Outlook Express Version 6 is to try and open an attachment in an email, but find that it is greyed out and you can't open the attachment.

This is caused by Microsoft making the default selection within the virus protection section of Outlook Express version 6:

"Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus."

In order to change this setting you must run Outlook Express Version 6, then select Tools -> Options then select the Security tab, you will find that "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus." is ticked. Untick it, and click OK.

You should now be able to open attachments that you receive via email. However becareful as these attachments could potentially contain a virus, be very cautious of .exe and .scr filetypes. The best protection will be to install a virus check, for more information on virus checkers click here.

Tried that already. I still can't open them.

I'm such a 'challenge,' aren't I?

Ah, Mr. B. I saw that when I was checking settings before, but I figured it would be best to keep that checked. I assumed it was ALWAYS checked, since I didn't change anything there myself, and I was able to open attachments a few days ago.

I just unchecked the box, and VOILA!

Thanks!!

Glad I could help-you always help me! If that didn't work
I was thinking like a virus checking program or something.
