Angry Did your kids bring home papers about the war?

It appears I am bound to be in a MOOD all night. Sadie brought home a printout explaining the whole Iraq situation. Fortunately, for her teacher, there is a tiny part about how it is all right to disagree with the government. But still. I don't agree with this. Not at all.

I just wish that they would leave it to ME to discuss with Sadie what I want to tell her about the war.

Steven brought home a nice letter from the School Super.
Basically, reassuring us that they will be doing everything to protect and keep our kids safe as well address any concerns kids may have (without adding to their anxieties),etc..........
I know they discussed the war in class today (3rd grade), one of the students brought it up actually.
Very 'matter-of-fact' though, the teacher didn't express an opinion either way.

Havent gotten any papers from either of my childrens schools..
I do know my daughter was allowed to watch some of it on TV today at school....

I wish they would not of done that ... We have watched it at home and talked about it. They just worried if we here at home would be bombed and if we would have to hear it like they seen on TV and I told them no we are gona be ok... If I feel a time to tell them other wise I will... But for now I dont want them subjected to hours and hours of footage....
Just like with the WTC they were traumatized enough with that just seeing it and haveing it talked about in school over and over...

They are fine though watching Disney , Playing with the puppy and just knowing that they are ok

I completely agree. My DD is 8 1/2 and though she's aware there are dangerous things going on around the world, she does NOT need to get bogged down in the worry of it all!! Let kids be kids for crying out loud!!! We discuss things with her when she asks questions, but otherwise, we just let her go about life as usual. I think there's a VERY fine line between awareness and immersion when it comes to these kinds of things. A 3rd-grader can be aware without having to be immersed in the whole thing!

Just my two cents, which, at today's gas rates, will just about getcha across the street!

I understand getting the letter from the superintendant...basicallly letting me know that my daughters are safe. What I DON'T approve of is telling her why we are fighting, what the war is about who Saddam is, and my favorite....Can an Iraqi missile hit us? Then it explains how it can't.

Well, YOU KNOW WHAT? Sadie didn't even know they had missiles...she never wanted to know if they had them but by God, NOW she does...I am going to be calling that school tomorrow tomorrow. I give my daughter just enough information and that is all. We don't have it on TV...we are living our lives as normally as possible.

We just got the paper from the principal & super regarding safety and what would happen if the schools had to close for any reason. They reassured us that they would not close unless there were real danger to the children & stated they wanted to keep things as normal as possible for all of the students. No television coverage at our school!

We got papers too

Mostly saying how to talk to your children about the war, recommending to avoid watching on tv - how children absorb information differently, and also emergency evacuation procedures for the school.

my 3rd & 1st grader brought home a letter in response to President Bush's war announcement on 3/19 basically stating they will provide the parents and staff with guidelines for dicussions of war. They attached this from the Crisis Management, similar to Naomi's previous post of NCCEV.

Obviously, this could have been done sooner since the document describes the war as "impending". I would have liked more time to prepare my speech to my children.
We had a family meeting last night to discuss the war, how it effects us, and how to prepare for an emergency.
The children have already been practicing drills for emergency in school. They call it "Code Sir" and instead of exiting the school (as with a fire drill) they gather in a corner or sheltered room and lock-down. The children were told this was in the case of a natural disaster, such as a hurricane.
There's more information here on how to prepare for emergency situations.
