MariB is welcome here
Gainesville nicknamed itself the Poultry Capital of the World when it ranked #1 world-wide for poultry production. Close to downtown there's a tiny piece of land called Poultry Park that contains a tall monument topped by a chicken.

In 1996 Gainesville's Lake Lanier served as the canoeing/kayaking venue for the Olympics. Many residents rented their homes to visitors and the Danish rowing team rented the house across the street from me. I slept through the excitement and tight security as the king of Denmark paid them a visit. The site now attracts rowers from all over the US and hosts national events.

In 1936 two tornados converged in the middle of town and produced the US's 5th deadliest tornado with over 200 people killed.

Civil War General James Longstreet lived in Gainesville and is buried here. My former BIL is a Civil War buff and told me that Longstreet was best known for his insubordination and inability to follow orders. However, the Longstreet Society has chosen to ignore this and has made him into a local hero. The subdivision in which I live was once part of his farm property.

Gainesville was the home of the late Ed Dodd, creator of the Mark Trail comic strip.

Re: What is your hometown famous for?

I was reading this old thread and it was interesting to read some of the responses.

I'm near Reno, NV and besides the casinos, right now we're famous for having a record snowfall!

Re: What is your hometown famous for?

"The Wyandot Popcorn Museum opened in early September of 1982, just prior to the 2nd annual Marion Popcorn Festival. Not only is it the only Popcorn Museum in the world, it also represents the largest collection of restored popcorn antiques. The Museum concept is an outgrowth of a historical research project by George K. Brown.

The first acquisition, in the Spring of 1981, was our feature popper, the Cretors 1899 No. 1 Popcorn Cart. It was purchased in badly decayed condition and was restored by expert Bob Pearson of Kansas. It is the third oldest existing Cretors popcorn machine. (The earliest patents for such equipment were filed in the 1890's) Further acquisitions have been restored by a team of self-trained employees, using the 1899 wagon as a prototype.

From Scouts to Senior Citizens, tour groups have been delighted to experience the Wyandot Popcorn Museum. The sights and sounds of chugging, popping and whistling help to take visitors back in time; and the aroma of popcorn and peanuts prepared fresh in the operational machines is mouth-watering! Free popcorn is served daily, and the fun of receiving a full serving from an old air popped popcorn vending machine is rarely missed. Visitors may browse at their leisure or request programs by appointment for larger groups. Tour programs include 3 videos, (kiddie, adult and senior), speaker, media and guided demonstrations."

Marion also is the location of the Wyandot Popcorn "Factory"...there are days you drive by and can smell caramel corn popcorn. I'm not a real big popcorn fan so that's probably a good thing..LOL!

Also Marion is home of President Harding's home and Memorial.
Caledonia the village that I live nearby is where is childhood home is located.
