SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Elizabeth Smart, the 15-year-old girl who vanished from her bedroom nearly eight months ago, was found alive Wednesday during a traffic stop in suburban Salt Lake City, police said.

"Miracles do exist," said the girl's uncle, Tom Smart.

The girl was found in the car of a drifter who was pulled over in a traffic stop Wednesday afternoon, Sandy police spokeswoman Michelle Burnette said.

"Two separate women called in and said they thought they had spotted 'Emmanuel,'" she said. Emmanuel, whose real name is Brian David Mitchell, once did work on the Smart's home.

I just heard it on the news. Talking about wonderful news. I would have never thought that they would have found her alive. I'm so happy for the Smart family. Hope Elizabeth is okay and hasn't been harmed in any way--now that would be another miracle!!!!!!!!!

Missing Utah Girl Smart Found Alive and Well

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (Reuters) - Elizabeth Smart, the 15-year-old girl kidnapped nine months ago, was found alive and well on Wednesday, in the company of a homeless street preacher who once worked for her family, Salt Lake City police said.

Smart was immediately reunited with her family at a Salt Lake City police station while the man and an unidentified woman were taken into custody.

The three were stopped in Sandy, Utah, by police who had been searching for the man, Brian David Mitchell, as a "person of interest" in Smart's disappearance.

Sandy is about 12 miles from the Smart family home in Salt Lake City.

Elizabeth Smart was kidnapped on June 5, 2002 by a gun-wielding lone male intruder from her bedroom while her little sister pretended to sleep in the same room.

She was found in a car driven by Mitchell, known to the Smart family as a street preacher named "Emmanuel," who had worked for one day as a handyman at their home, police said.

Investigators renewed their search for Mitchell last month based on descriptions by Elizabeth's 9-year-old sister, Mary Katherine, of the mysterious, cap-wearing intruder.

Smart's disappearance triggered a nationwide kidnapping scare last summer. She was the subject of a nationwide manhunt, with rewards totaling $250,000 offered for her safe return.

Josh Ewing, a spokesman for Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson, said Elizabeth was reunited with her parents a short time after being found.

"I'm told she looks OK," he said.

Last month, Salt Lake City police detectives described Mitchell as "just a person of interest" in the case.

Mitchell first came into contact with the Smart family months before the abduction while asking for handouts near a downtown mall. Elizabeth's mother, Lois Smart, gave him money and offered him work around their Federal Heights home.

The Smart family issued a sketch of Mitchell, then known only as "Emmanuel," several weeks ago with information that he worked for the family briefly.

The only person police have identified as a suspect in the kidnapping is Richard Ricci. Ricci, a handyman, worked for the Smarts and knew the home layout well. Ricci died in jail last August and claimed all along he was innocent.

The abduction of Elizabeth, a talented harp player who was active in the Mormon church and described by her family as shy and sweet, stunned the city of Salt Lake and much of the nation during a summer when a series of child abductions dominated the U.S. news.

I just heard this on the radio on my way home from work....ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!! I also hope she wasn't harmed in any way during these last several months!

It is a truly incredible story that she was found alive!!!!

What a tramatic thing for someone to have to go thru and for so long... I pray that she will be ok emotionally...
