Shocked Skylar's ear was BLEEDING this morning!!

i woke up this morning to SISSY'S EAR BLEEDING!!!!!!! today her class didn't have school because the PM students had a field trip so she was gonna come into work with me for a couple hours until chris got home from work...well every morning normally she's like "mommy my tummy hurts my arm hurts my leg hurts etc" and i always give her big kisses and tell her she's fine (she just wants to stay home and have mommy stay home with her lol) and then she laughs and gets dressed...well this morning it was her ear and so i did the normal but when i went to kiss her i took one look at the right side of her face and nearly FAINTED she had blood and puss coming out of her ear...i FREAKED!!!!!!! i called work and hubby and told them i was bringing her into the E.R. PRONTO...as soon as my heart stopped beating a gazillion times a minute anyway...

i took her into the E.R. she has an outer ear infection (swimmer's ear and what caused the blood and pus) an inner ear infection, a lymph node infection, and a throat infection she didn't even have a COLD! i had no idea she was even sick! she wasn't coughing or anything! they said it may be allergy related so, so much for me thinking the allergies had bypassed sissy my momma gets swimmer's ear all the time too so it doesn't surprise me that sissy gets it too..not to mention she spends 10 years in the bathtub! she's doing well now, they gave her eurythromycin, some kind of sulfates and hydrocortisone drops, and motrin...poor baby we're gonna snuggle and eat chicken soup and watch movies tonight...i was so scared!! thank goodness she was ok i still can't believe it, she wasn't even sick, not even a sniffle!

Glad to hear she'll be okay! It's a good thing it wasn't her inner ear that had the most problem. Last year my son had a cold & I took him to the doc on Thursday, and, of course, they told me "it's just a cold" and to bring him back if it wasnt better by the following Monday. That Friday night he woke up crying in the middle of the night that his ear hurt so I gave him the normal OTC medications & he went back to bed. He got up the next morning & came to me and said "Mommy, my ear doesnt hurt anymore", with blood running down the side of his face. I took him to Urgent care and he had an inner ear infetion and it had ruptured his ear drum. His other ear was severely infected too. It makes me angry when doctors just brush you off and don't listen to your concerns as a parent. This child of mine has never had "Just a cold". When he is sick, it is always more and he needs Antibiotics, but the doctor didn't listen to me. He certainly got an earful when I had to bring Andrew back for his recheck. The infection still wasnt completely gone & they had to put him on stronger meds yet.

Just this past Thursday, he woke up with a sore throat (that looked really bad to me) so I made an appointment and his daddy had to take him in because i was already taking the oldest DS to the Orthodontist. The Nurse scolded Kevin, my husband, and told him that we "really should have waited 24 hours" to bring Andrew in. (DH just said "I just do what the wife tells me to"...good boy LOL) They did a rapid strep test and...go figure.....it was positive, literally, in seconds. I made a phone call to the office manager and told her that the nurses need to keep their opinions to themselves. I am this child's parent and know him better than anyone. It is inappropriate for a nurse to tell you when you should or should not seek medical attention for your children, especially before the tests had been done!

Rayann is an unknown quantity
I used to get swimmers ear a lot as a kid.
Its very painful.
There are some drops you can get at the drug store.
called "Swimmers ear"
Its mostly alcohol based, and all you do is have her tilt her head to the side, put a few drops in the ear. Wait a second or two and then have her flip her head back over. It breaks the water bubble so that the water can escape from the ear.
You may need to use that when ever she gets out of the tub to prevent future infections from occurring.

I always use mine when ever I have been swimming and I've not had another ear infection since.

UGH UGH UGH...ear infections..So sorry babe, these are the one thing that will make me cry like a baby (2-3 days into it) EVERY time. I have lost part of my hearing from rupturing the eardrum. Last Summer I dove into the pool and wasn't careful to not go down to the bottom like I usually am. I "felt" the pop and later that night I had blood running from my ear....AGAIN. I had them REALLY bad as a child, had the tube and the adenoids taken out, but it doesn't seem to have made a difference for me. Now I am ALWAYS careful about swimming and such...heck, I even plug my ears while I shower...it's no wonder Kenny can scare the crap outta me in there, I don't hear him moving in for the big "Araaaaaaaaagh"...LOL!
Give Sissy hugs and kisses from all of us honey!!!!!! Take one for yourself also...it's some scary stuff to see that happen to your baby.

AMEN, I ran into this when I had called the Orth. Surgeon's office when Matthew fractured his elbow recently. He was put in a temp. splint at the urgent care facility but we were told to set up an appt. with the OS.......called them up on a Thursday?. The girl at the desk asked if he was in a splint, I told her yes. She said that it would be OK to hold him off until the following week seeing as how he was in a splint.
EXCUSE ME????????
I insisted that he get in sooner. Needless to say he was seen the next day
She had NO right to make that call. She has NO medical training (her job is to answer phones and schedule appts, PERIOD).
I filed a complaint against her.
Don't people know who they're messing with when they start with mothers?

Wink thanks everyone!!!

rayann, i have to run some errands today so I'll see if i can't find those drops, she has some now, but if they sell them over the counter too i'm gonna grab a bottle to keep around for her...my mom said to do that too, she said "poor sissy she got her meemaw's genes!" LOL..my mom is miserable when she gets them and it looks like sissy has my mom's speech impediment (skylar doesn't say her "s" sounds, but we're working on it, she's getting better, and my mom didn't either) AND her ears....the older she gets the more she has my mom's personality too! my mom LOVES that LOL!!

she's doing MUCH better today...i thought she would be cranky about having to take so much medicine and lay still for the drops but she's being very good about it! and the weird thing is, NOW she's sneezing and coughing, no runny nose yet, but i was like ok sissy you're doing it backwards here LOL!! we snuggled in the blankets and watched the iron giant last night and she fell asleep on me...poor baby...this is my child who NEVER gets sick! so it's really hard when she does, this is only the second ear infection she's had EVER! gavin used to get sick all the time, had an ear infection AT LEAST once a month before we got his tonsils and adenoids removed, but ever since then, he hasn't gotten so much as a cold!

mouse i had tubes in my ears too when i was 5, so far so good, neither one of my kids have had to have them, they thought maybe gavin would but waited until after his surgery and then found he didn't need them after all

juliannaluv, i know exactly what you mean!! that irritates me too, we know our children and certainly know their illnesses, that nurse was just WRONG to say that

and thanks for the hug for me too...most of the time i don't freak out about much (i swear i don't really LOL) but when it comes to my babies..OH LORD...i will faint dead away LOL! nothing in the world can scare you like something happening to your baby, that's for sure!! (((((((DOD))))))))

I friend just told me about a time when she had called her doctor late at night beccause her son (about 10 then, 20-something now) had a really bad tummyache. He told her to keep an eye on him, and call during regular hours the next day. So she put him to bed, got undressed herself, and then the phone rang. The doctor called back to say that maybe she ought to take him in the ER, he just realized that she has *never* called after hours before, so if she thinks something is wrong, there probably is. It turned out to be a ruptured appendix. So there is/was at least one doctor who is willing to give a mother credit.

Boy, do I remember the days when my kids got ear infections!! They would get so sick. Now that they're older, (8 and 11), they seem to have outgrown them, because neither one has had one for years. Personally, I'm lucky that Ive never had one.
Hope she gets better real soon!

thanks everyone!!

she's doing a lot better today...she's mad at me cuz i keep giving her medicine (but MOOOOOOOOOOOM i don't hurt anymore! ) but i think the initial trauma is over LOL!! i've been keeping a close eye on her and while she is a little more tired than normal, she is eating and drinking well talk about a scare! it's hard when your babies get sick, but i think it's worse when the one that *never* gets sick does cuz you just don't expect it
