| I think I'm going to this time around. IMO, it was a good 'music year' ![]() Grammy Forecast Our picks for who will win -- and who should win By Kat Giantis MSN Entertainment Predicting who will win a Grammy is a little like predicting Britney Spears' next boyfriend: It's anybody's game, and there are bound to be some disappointments. This year's Grammys are a particularly tough call because voters went with a mostly well-balanced field consisting of deserving veterans (Bruce Springsteen), hitmakers (Eminem, Nelly), and newcomers (Norah Jones). Sure, the system still needs work, as evidenced by the absence of critical darlings Wilco and the five nods bestowed on TRL-staple Avril Lavigne (she's tied with Eminem, Springsteen, Jones, Ashanti, Nelly, Sheryl Crow, and Raphael Saadiq). But let's give Grammy voters props for attempting to get with the times. After all, these are the same people who just a couple of years ago gave the Best Album award to Steely freakin' Dan. We've deconstructed the top six categories for the 45th Annual Grammy Awards, analyzing who we think should win and who we think will win. Tune into the Grammys on Feb. 23 (8 p.m. ET/PT on CBS) to see how close we came -- and, of course, whom Britney brought as her date. RECORD OF THE YEAR "A Thousand Miles," Vanessa Carlton "Without Me," Eminem "Don't Know Why," Norah Jones "Dilemma," Nelly Featuring Kelly Rowland "How You Remind Me," Nickelback Who should win: This was the year of Eminem. His infectious "Without Me" dominated MTV and the airwaves, and The Eminem Show was the top-selling album of 2002. He also traded controversy for credibility with his acclaimed turn in the movie 8 Mile, a fact that could sway voters, who have never awarded him a Grammy in a major category. Who will win: Seriously, Nickelback?!? 'Nuff said. Nelly's "Dilemma" ruled the singles charts (and is the biggest seller of the five nominees), but he'll suffer in Eminem's shadow. And in the battle of piano-playing songbirds, Vanessa Carlton simply can't compete with fellow newcomer Norah Jones, whose smoldering chart-topper "Don't Know Why" is the kind of song Grammy voters love: catchy, classic, accessible and a huge seller. Our money is on Miss Jones. ALBUM OF THE YEAR Home, Dixie Chicks The Eminem Show, Eminem Come Away With Me, Norah Jones Nellyville, Nelly The Rising,Bruce Springsteen Who should win: All five contenders produced work that struck a chord with critics and consumers, but for sheer emotional wallop, Springsteen's The Rising, a musical examination of the world after 9/11, stands alone. Grammy voters love relevant releases with a message almost as much as they love nostalgia ... and this is the first album Springsteen has recorded with the E Street Band in nearly two decades. Who will win: The Dixie Chicks' fast-selling Home could suffer from last year's sweep of the country-tinged O Brother Where Art Thou? soundtrack, while Nelly and Eminem may end up splitting the rap vote. That leaves Springsteen and Norah Jones. Like the Oscars, the Grammys tend to reward veterans who've been overlooked in the past -- and Bruce has never won Album of the Year. Sorry, Norah. The Boss is not only long overdue, he's the most deserving. SONG OF THE YEAR [Songwriter Award] "Complicated"; Lauren Christy, Graham Edwards, Avril Lavigne & Scott Spock, songwriters (Avril Lavigne); Album: Let Go "Don't Know Why";Jesse Harris, songwriter (Norah Jones); Album: Come Away With Me "The Rising";Bruce Springsteen, songwriter (Bruce Springsteen); Album: The Rising "A Thousand Miles"; Vanessa Carlton, songwriter (Vanessa Carlton); Album: Be Not Nobody "Where Were You (When the World Stopped Turning)"; Alan Jackson, songwriter (Alan Jackson); Album: Drive Who should win: Jesse Harris, the man behind Norah Jones' "Don't Know Why," has written a new jazz-pop standard. It won't be long before American Idol hopefuls are warbling this tune in a failed bid to impress Simon Cowell. Springsteen's "The Rising" would also be a worthy winner, especially since it failed to nab a nomination for Record of the Year. Who will win: Vanessa Carlton's hugely successful "A Thousand Miles" will probably cancel out Avril Lavigne's equally poppy monster hit "Complicated," which required a jaw-dropping four writers to pen. And while Grammy voters are suckers for sultry ballads -- Alicia Keys' "Fallin'" was honored last year -- they could decide to branch out, which could lock out Harris' "Don't Know Why." The post-9/11 anthems "The Rising" and Alan Jackson's "Where Were You (When the World Stopped Turning)" are clearly the frontrunners, but Springsteen's lack of schmaltz should lead him to victory (plus, there's precedent: his spare, message-laden "Streets of Philadelphia" won Best Song in 1994). BEST NEW ARTIST Ashanti Michelle Branch Norah Jones Avril Lavigne John Mayer Who should win: Norah Jones presents as the Bizarro Britney -- she writes songs, plays piano and generally avoids diva-like behavior. Her polished debut shows a maturity that belies her 23 years, and her refusal to be sucked into the recording industry's image-makeover machine forecasts a bright future, which should be what this category is about. Plus, Norah has that cool "Ravi-Shankar-is-my-dad" thing working for her. Who will win: Grammy voters are notoriously unpredictable with their Best New Artist picks, having honored such flash-in-the-pan acts as Milli Vanilli and A Taste of Honey. R&B star Ashanti and teen chanteuse Michelle Branch are both likely to be overlooked here, and though John Mayer's album has been selling briskly, he's a very dark horse in this hotly contested race. Jones is a strong contender since her chart-topping album is still fresh in voters' minds, but the true wild card is Avril Lavigne, who has sold a monstrous 4 million copies of Let Go. Voters could decide to throw her a bone and reward her sales success with a win in this category. BEST FEMALE POP VOCAL PERFORMANCE "Soak Up the Sun" Sheryl Crow; Album: C'mon, C'mon "Don't Know Why"; Norah Jones; Album: Come Away With Me "Complicated"; Avril Lavigne; Album: Let Go "Get the Party Started"; Pink; Album: M!ssundaztood "Overprotected"; Britney Spears; Album: Britney Who should win: Unlike a lot of female pop stars, Jones keeps her clothes on and strips down her vocals. Is it really so complicated that the restrained "Don't Know Why" easily trumps the overproduced pomp of Pink, Britney and Avril? Who will win: Sheryl Crow's last win in this category was a decade ago, for the ditty "All I Wanna Do." Odds are not in her favor. Britney's love life made more of an impression in 2002 than her music -- "Overprotected" doesn't have a prayer. Pink's "Get the Party Started" is but a distant, peppy, inescapable memory, which voters aren't likely to dredge up for fear the song will once again get stuck in their heads. Last year, Nelly Furtado's innocuous "I'm Like a Bird" beat out Faith Hill, Janet Jackson, Sade and Lucinda Williams, a fact that could give the edge to the pure pop sensibility of Lavigne (despite her self-styled "punk" leanings). But in the end, we think Jones and her strong pipes will prevail. BEST MALE POP VOCAL PERFORMANCE "7 Days"; Craig David; Album: Born To Do It "Original Sin"; Elton John; Album: Songs From the West Coast "Your Body Is a Wonderland"; John Mayer; Album: Room for Squares "Fragile"; Sting; Album: ...All This Time "October Road"; James Taylor; Album: October Road Who should win: Fan favorite John Mayer and Brit phenom Craig David would both be worthy choices in this musty category, having earned strong notices for their 2002 releases. But these fresh-faced newbies have almost zero chance against their more recognizable (and AARP-friendly) rivals -- remember, Grammy voters skew older. Who will win: This category could use some serious housecleaning: James Taylor won last year, while Sting took the award in 2000 and 1999. Previous winners break down like this: Eric Clapton (199 , Elton John (1997), Eric Clapton (1996), Seal (1995), Elton John (1994), Sting (1993), Eric Clapton (1992). See a pattern? Despite the good reviews garnered by Taylor's easygoing October Road and John's introspective Songs From the West Coast, Sting is clearly the favorite here. ... All This Time was recorded live on 9/11 and the haunting "Fragile" is weighted with the events of the day. Look for voters to respond accordingly.__________________ Check out these [Only registered and activated users can see links. | last year they honored O Brother, now Norah. There's still a lot of crap out there, but the tide is starting to turn. O Brother sold millions even though people aren't supposed to like real music anymore. Norah winning would be cool, she's a Texas outlaw like her pal and idol Willie but, then again, I have to wake up at 4am for work, so I sleep early, and who cares what the Grammys say __________________ Check out these [Only registered and activated users can see links. | Nope... it is going to be a bash-Bush love fest for the media elite and out of touch hollywood types. I'll pass on their meaningless, self-important propaganda. Can't stomach the hypocrisy...
