Latest scam?

It started yesterday. I began getting a bunch of emails from [Only registered and activated users can see links. Either login above or Register Now] that said similar things:

I don't remember signing up for anything like this (even if it was in front of my face, I wouldn't sign up for it). I don't remember seeing any pop-ups about this, so I don't think I "subscribed" accidentally. I think this is a cheap tactic to make people believe they're quickly ascending to the top of a pyramid scheme and once they "activate" (by spending some money), they will start seeing the money rolling in. It's interesting that I've probably got over 20 of these emails, each of them saying that "10 more people have been added", yet my "left and right" totals are still zero.
