Unhappy Poor me ... all my threads get locked...

Someone said in the last one that any post that has to do with any type of religion should be locked. This especially seems strange to me since there are several people here who chose religious user names, and who use Bible verses or other religiousy ideas as their signature.

Is there any sort of rule of thumb for the moderators in locking a thread. I don't have a problem with threads getting locked if there is angry fighting or something... but with this past one, for example, there was none of that. Even Mayor posted in it, and it was still locked after that. What's up with that. If the thread is fine with Mayor than shouldn't it be fine with the mods? Is it now going to be the rule that no talk of any type of religion is allowed here at DOD... even if it's done respectfully?

There are a lot of controversial topics that have been discussed at DOD that were non-religious... and no one locked those. Is it fine to talk about controversy as long as it is not religious?

As far as the arguement for not putting others down... I can understand closing threads when certain members put others down - I wasn't doing that. As far as that goes... FUNdamental has been "put down" in several threads and those are not locked.

If anyone else mentions taking this type of threads to truthsoup I think I may go crazy. If you go to truthsoup you can see that NO ONE IS THERE! There are a handful of posts and many that are up are still from 2001.

I'm wondering if there is a rule of thumb the mods have been told to go by and what the DOD members think.

Yes, I was wondering about that, too. That thread didn't appear like it was in need of being locked or deleted. It seemed to be satisfying some curiosity about Christian Science and was being handled by participants with mutual respect for each other. Actually, TB, I was thinking on responding to your comment that "Christian" and "Science" are mutually exclusive, as I don't agree, but I'm sure I know the context of your statement. Anyway, you can't respond if a thread is "locked", can you?

P.S. I checked out "truthsoup" as well. That site seems to have had minimal activity for about a year. Somewhat strange, because it didn't seem to have the necessary ingredients for disinterest or hostility. Maybe it just didn't have enough interested players.

I didn't read the thread, nor do I know who locked it, but maybe if posts are just being locked because of religious conversation, then possibly certain mods need to be refreshed on what threads should or should not be locked.

A mod's personal feelings toward a thread should not be a reason to lock it - it should have to break a DOD rule first. I think Mayor maybe needs to step in.

I was somewhat surprised to find out that the thread had been locked as well. It hadn't turned 'ugly' (yet, anyway)

Oops...

...I was mistaken about teraberry making the comment about "Christian" and "Science" mixing like "oil and water". It was valleygirl's statement, just for the record. And to reiterate, I don't think it was intended as written, especially after being familiar with her other posts.

Talking

this has nothing to do with DOD, but there's a message dedicated to pro wrestling that I go to occasionally, there's a lot of interesting discussion about old school trivia and wrestling, my posts get locked often. There some odd "office politics" of that board. A lot of offtopic posts are allowed, but for some reason mine get locked.
the ironic thing, when they don't lock me, I actually have some of the most responses ever. I was voted the 2nd most popular poster there (and I don't even go there that much!) but I guess a couple moderators don't like me!

Blue,
I hate to be the one who has to tell you this, but unless you're the #1 poster on another message board, you have no credibility here. Do you think DOD lets in just anyone? Spend some more time there and come back here when you've accomplished that goal!

gee, I hope he knows I'm kidding

As for Teraberry, I think the mods should lock this thread right now! If for no other reason than to satisfy a self-fulfilling prophecy!

Or you can e-mail or private message those on the board you think would be interested in a discussion of religion. That way those who would be offended never have to see what is said.

And the discussions started heading into the same directions it seems these are heading. It became issues of free speech, being allowed to express some opinions and not others, certain people being *picked* on for their firmly held beliefs....

It got VERY ugly. VERY.

So Mayor started TruthSoup. He did that in an effort to give folks an open forum to discuss more controversial topics. teraberry, you are right. Not many people have been over there recently because most people don't WANT to argue/discuss/debate religious views. It is far too sensative a topic, especially on a board like this where there are so many different cultures and people who participate.

The nice thing about this board is that the mods work HARD to try to keep things from getting ugly again. IMO, they do it with respect. It's a difficult job for them. Regardless of what action they take, somebody will perceive it as getting censored.

Like you said, many people have religious names or religious quotes/sayings in their sig lines. So religion itself is not forbidden here...lol...just discussing topics that have a tendancy to get a little out of hand.

Okay... I'm going crazy now...

PLEASE! Before you post at least read the first post. Truthsoup is NOT an option - no one is there. Why would you say... "go to truthsoup". It'd be like sending an email to yourself.

Welcome to TruthSoup! This site was created to provide information and to stir up healthy discussion on a variety of religious, spiritual and cultural topics. It is the belief of this site that Truth is absolute. By shedding our preconceived notions on a given topic, and by determining to know the truth regardless of how it affects us, we can discover new ideas and philosophies which may enrich our lives.
This site is intended to be controversial! After all, many of us were brought up in a certain religious or political setting. However, just because we were taught a certain philosophy does NOT mean that it is true! On the contrary, human beings have a way of propogating and dessiminating many lies and falsehoods, all for the purpose of staying "comfortable" in the familiar worldview they have always known.

Take a healthy helping of religion, stir in a few teaspoons of politics, and gently simmer over a hotbed of current events. What have you got? TruthSoup!

Well, I can see why certain things said would be offensive to other people in teraberrys posts. But at the same time, she is very black and white in her subject line, you have to choose to click her topic, it does have an element of choice to it. So I don't understand the locks myself. As long as it only occurs in one thread, how does it affect everyone else?

UM maybe because if you went and made a post and then asked people to join you if interested, then you would have a place to discuss, ask questions and debate?

I don't know, call me crazy, but that would be what I would do. LOL!
