While I agree with you on the posts made by TB, sometimes you have to admit, that is not the case. The depression threads were not "black and white" and seemed to get WAY OFF track, so people went into those without knowing it had turned into somewhat of a religion debate. While I am not blaming anyone, I do want to point out that this same kind of "potential" was what prompted the "Mod Judgment Call" type rule. If it looks like an innocent subject that could get ugly, lock it before it does and feelings are hurt.

GOOD GRIEF THE TYPOS IN MY POST! Had to edit TWICE to get rid of them! LOL!

But at the same time, she is very black and white in her subject line, you have to choose to click her topic, it does have an element of choice to it. So I don't understand the locks myself. As long as it only occurs in one thread, how does it affect everyone else?

Look at all the religious posts Twonky has posted over there that no one has even answered to! Would anyone like to lead the discussions from there? I'm interested in the responses!

Let's NOT let this thread get ugly!

Here's my question to the members here. Please answer this...

Do you personally want this forum to:

1) not allow discussion of any type of religion , thus avoiding possible problems

2) allow religious discussion and have the thread locked only if it got ugly

3) allow relgious discussion even if it did get ugly (I don't think any of us would choose this one)

I appreciate, Sandy, your offer to go to truthsoup and you will be there. But in honesty, my question about the reading rooms in the Christian Science church was already answered. Also, I don't want to have discussions that only include a few people. I like being able to get a wide range of people's ideas and thoughts. Especially here at DOD where I already know a lot of the people. The problem with truthsoup is that you end up getting a pretty narrow variety of people, and it is not as diverse.

It's interesting to hear some of the history of this site before I got involved in it and to realize there is an association between DOD and TruthSoup. To answer one of my prior curiosities: "what caused the site to die?", maybe few people knew about it. Was there ever an icon present to link to the other site? Even if it debates were active and "heated", won't the same problems exist there with people picking on other people and getting ugly? If not, why not? If controls were implemented there to prevent that, couldn't the same controls be implemented here? Overall, I think the "policing" is fair. I've had a couple of my posts get deleted and I don't mind. I do question the Christian Science thread locking, but I can understand when people are afraid to have more "ugly" incidents occur. It's a tough line to walk to keep the site "family friendly" as intended but to not implement smothering controls that no longer make it fun. My hat is off to the Mayor for his attempts at this balancing act.

I like the idea of a one-stop site and the "family" feel of DOD. You find deals and generally help each other along in life. Splitting up the site is inconvenient, IMO. Conversation is nice when you can just say what you're feeling at any given time. Tangents can be taken and explored - you're not compartmentalized into defined subject matter as in TruthSoup - maybe that's why there's more activity on DOD forums than TruthSoup's?

Wow! This thread is getting some action! I just opened another window before I posted this to see if others had responded in the time it took me to write it. I think I can post this without it repeating what someone else just said.

Yes, I agree bassmount. The depression thread was a little sidewaise. There is a balance, and it sounds like teraberry is trying to find it, be a little more gentle. Words come across very harsh when someone is posting in a vulnerable spot.

But if she starts the post, and it is not inflaming in the topic line (such as the Catholic involvement with Hitler-hehe teraberry, I actually groaned at that one) I think they should not be locked. She gives plenty of warning in her topic line, so there is a choice. Also, I do thinks its very interesting to hear (read) what other people think. I have really enjoyed reading the past political threads. Its always scary because you don't want anyone to get mad at each other, and tempers do flare a bit. But as long as there is no name calling, I think they should be allowed to go on.

Religion is a rough subject, and the thread will probably never achieve a "feel good" status. Same with politics. But very interesting reading, almost as good as "women only' threads- lol

I agree... the more controversial post are also the most interesting and often educational... whether it be religion, politics, or social issues. I think if you just take out those threads altogether, the forum would be very boring. I don't think I would hang around.

Man, I know a lot of this was discussed at the conception and birth of Truthsoup. I am not sure if those posts exist anymore, but let's just say, that due to a lot of unrest it was decided by Mayor to open Truthsoup, because to many, many, many members it was not possible to achive what DOD was supposed to be and still allow many of the things that people were discussing. That make sense? I know at the time a lot of people had the link in their sig lines, but no to my recolection an "official link" was not posted on the DOD site.

If mot, please feel free to PM any of us that were here at the time and we could try to go more in depth with it. Steph or Sandy may be able to word it better, but any of us could probably explain it.

The same types of controls aren't needed over there. It's a debate board, and anyone going in has to go in with their eyes wide open...lol. If a person is easily offended, then s/he should stay out. It is an OPEN forum, designed that way on purpose. Well, still, one should have respect when one is debating...lol.

teraberry...I'm guessing here...k? I don't want to speak for whichever mod locked the thread. But I think the lock came about after your questions were answered, and you asked Daq a question, followed by a personal comment about letting kids die rather than seek medical attention. I can see the potential for hurt feelings with a statement like that. I beleive we do have some C/S members on this board, and a statement like that goes against the very core of their beliefs. Those are the types of statements and comments that belong over on "The Other" board..lol.

teraberry, we can all appreciate the effort you are making to find the middle ground I know it's difficult when your own faith is so strong and such a huge part of your life. It would be like me trying to have a discussion without bringing up dogs or kids...HUGE components in MY life. Unfortunately, past history on this board has left quite a few members gun shy.

__I don't feel like my comments to Daquiri were out of bounds at all. I'm not sure why you would think they were. It IS sad that children would die who could've received treatment. If it wrong to say that than, than good greif, I don't know what's right.

I did not intend for this discussion to be about me. I am wondering how you other members feel. Do you want religious talk of any sort banned? Do you think it should be allowed with certain restrictions?

Live and let live.

If people want to discuss religion that's fine with me as long as they don't push their views down anyones throat.

Unfortunately this is exactly why most religious threads get locked.
