Question SAD Seasonal Affective Disorder

Does anyone here have this? I do and I am trying to find a treatment that works well. I can deal with the depression part but the oversleeping is ruining everything. Any information would help lots. If anyone has this I am curious about how you handle it.

BTW, please don't say anything if you have nothing nice to say. This is a very sensitive issue for me right now. Opinions are fine but being mean is not.

I know what you mean, winter can be very depressing. I really hate it when the sun is not shining in the winter, it makes me feel really down. Have you tried taking a vitamin/mineral supplement? That helped me when I was depressed and cured the problem. I think it's a lack of sunshine/bright light in the winter which causes the problem. I don't really have any other answers for you, wish I did. Maybe rent some travel videos to watch of some tropical places like Bali or Hawaii, some places that have alot of sun. That's the only thing I can think of. Good luck with your problem. I hope it goes away soon for you. It is a very common around this time of year. You are not alone.

The only other thing I can think of is take a mini-vacation to someplace warm and sunny. That's one of the reasons I'm heading for Vegas next week, it's supposed to be 62 degrees and sunny, not like here where the winds are whipping and it has been between 9 and 20 degrees outside. There are some good Vegas deals out there, check out VegasFreedom.com web-site if you are interested. You don't even have to gamble, there is so much to see and do. I don't gamble at all.

There are also things called light boxes that you can purchase to help with your problem.

Other than that, moving to a very sunny place is the other option.

I'm not familiar with this condition...but I get the idea that it has to do with seasonal issues, like winter blahs, just worse? Is that right? Excuse my ignorance.......

DH always thinks I need to go see someone, because he thinks I have mild depression. I have difficulty falling asleep and difficulty waking up......plus I just feel down. But, I think a lot of it has to do with losing my Mom in September.

Wish I knew what to suggest that might help you....perhaps others on DOD have ideas? I know when i start feeling down, I try to find something that I can find beauty in, something to appreciate...like how the snow looks glittery in the sun, a pretty bird, sunset, a fresh smelling breeze, ect. Sometimes things like that pick me up.

Has anyone tried St. John's Wort? I was thinking about trying it.

Tanning. I'm not kidding. If you don't want the tan itself, slather on some SPF40 or something. I am sensitve to light deprivation too. A friend suggested it to me a few years ago, and it really does help. Plus, it's way cheaper than anti-depressants. And, as a little bonus, it helped with my arthritis when the temps were so cold.

During those times when it seems like the sun is NEVER coming out, and it's dreary and rainy, I'd go tan 4 times a week...15-20 minutes each time.

I know EXACTLY how you feel! I use to get bummed out every winter. It hasn't happened for two years now, because I started walking! I try and go every day, not very brisk, I am only out for the light. It is hardly ever sunny where I live, but I have found that being outside still helps, maybe the UV rays help, they come regardless of clouds.

And if its sunny, I walk very very slow-lol.

But not in the rain. I have my limits! So try to go around your block, and if that is not an option, just walk up and down your street a little. Its not the distance, its the 15 minutes or more you can be out.

Hope you feel better babe (((((((((big hug))))))))))))

BTW Yes I have tried St. Jons Wort. Because it is not governed each manufacture has different amounts, or uses different parts of the plants, so some work some dont. There can be drastic variations from pill to pill even in the same bottle. It can not be used with any anti-depressants, and it can have an affect on your heart.

Get outside in the sun as much as you can. I know you can buy light banks that provide full spectrum lighting in your home (they are not inexpensive, though). A good article on SAD can be found at [Only registered and activated users can see links. Either login above or Register Now] .
