NASA space shuttle Columbia breaks up at 200,000 feet over Texas

I just saw the footage on the news this morning. It's just so horrible and sad for the crew members families. The space shuttle Columbia I believe they said was 22 years old. All communication was lost with the 7 crew members onboard.

Yes, I just tuned in CNN. Very tragic. Always terrible for families of crew. My prayers go out for them. They said it was near landing time.

Like a commercial airplane that may have been hit by debris? I heard that someone thought there were chase planes, but they realized that those were just pieces of the shuttle that had broken up.

My daughter came in and told me this a little while ago....how awful! I wonder what happened? Wrong trajectory? Age of shuttle? It's truly terrible...brings back feelings from the last tragedy years ago....

This happened very close to the date when the Challenger exploded. That was on January 28th, 1986. How tragic

I get the NASA channel on my Dish Network, but all they are showing now are people sitting there watching monitors. The same scene they keep showing on CNN, MSNBC...

My guess would be age. These shuttles go through enormous stress in their journeys. One little hairline crack could fail upon reentry. The fact that there was an Israeli soldier on board should also cast suspicion on some ground workers. Someone sentimental to the Palestinian "cause" could introduce something that could cause such a failure. That would be VERY hard to prove, but I would think there would be interrogation of workers and reevaluation of security measures as a result of this.

My brother and sis-in-law are in visiting me this week. DB knows people at NASA. We are in shock. May God Bless their souls.

I started this thread by mistake. May I suggest that we focus all comments on this tragedy to the original post?

Ignore the above. It appears that both threads have been combined into this one now.
