Ohio Mother "Faked" Daughter's Cancer

Talk about a mixture of emotions while reading this story.

I can't imagine ANYONE doing this....I can't stop thinking of how this child believed she was dying....so very sad. Personally, I also think this "mother" insulted everyone who has ever had to deal with Cancer.

"Ohio mother apparently faked daughter's cancer

URBANA, Ohio (December 19, 5:09 p.m. AST) - Police say a woman tricked her daughter and community into thinking the girl had cancer so she could raise money, even going so far as to shave the 7-year-old's head and put her in counseling to prepare to die.
Teresa Milbrandt, 35, received more than $10,000 from businesses and residents, police Lt. Garry Kimpel estimated Thursday. Authorities do not know what she did with the money.

"She said it was a little white lie that got out of control," Sgt. David Reese said.

Police were investigating Milbrandt, her husband, Robert, and a third person whom Reese would not identify. No charges had been filed Thursday.

The girl, Hannah, has been taken from her and placed in the custody of relatives.

No one answered the door of the Milbrandts' home Thursday, and their telephone number is unpublished.

Robert Milbrandt, 44, said he and his daughter never knew the cancer was faked. He said he took his wife to a mental hospital on Tuesday.

"I don't know how you can be married to someone for so long, them lie to you and you not know," he told the Urbana Daily Citizen.

However, Reese said Milbrandt told police he found out about the hoax about a month ago. It had been going on since at least April, Reese said.

Residents of Urbana, a community of about 11,600 people about 40 miles northwest of Columbus, said they felt betrayed.

"How could a mother do something like that to her child?" Melonie Jumper said. "I can't believe somebody could be so cruel to make the townspeople come forth with an effort to help them because there's a sick child. It just floors me."

Police began investigating the child's illness about a week ago, after employees at the girl's school noticed her hair was cut or shaved, not falling out.

Reese said Teresa Milbrandt told county officials this week that the cancer was a hoax. He said she told them that she would tell Hannah they were going to the doctor, drive until the girl fell asleep, then return home and tell her daughter that she had received her treatments while she slept.

Reese said Milbrandt gave her daughter sleeping pills and shaved her head to make it appear she was receiving chemotherapy. She also placed a bandage on the girl's back to cover a supposed "port" where chemotherapy was administered, he said.

"Whenever anybody would ask her a question about leukemia, she would go on the Internet and look up the answers," Reese said.

He said police have collected coffee cans placed at businesses to seek donations that would supposedly go toward treatment. Police also found fliers with photos of the girl inviting people to fund-raisers.

At least one church gave $2,200 and two agencies gave $500 each. Reese said children turned in thousands of pop can tabs to redeem for money to help the family pay medical bills.

Reese said the girl has some illnesses but none that are life-threatening.

Tish Turnmire, who runs a nail salon in Urbana, said she raised more than $700 and took Thanksgiving dinner to the family.

"You do something out of the goodness of your heart thinking that you're helping, and you find out that they've been lying to you all this time," she said Thursday."

I read that in the local papers a few weeks ago but at that time they were just charing the mother...now their bringing charges up against the father and grandmother. Seems like a whole sick family project here. They should be thankful they never had to go thru having a child with cancer....if they were that despaerate for money they should have found a 2nd job maybe?

Yes, my dh was asking why they did not leave the child with her father. I was like "are you kidding?" How could the dad have been fooled? If you found out your dd had cancer wouldn't you be at a few of the doctors appointments at the very least? This has bothered me more and more, I have been praying for this little one all day.

I read about this in the paper a week or so ago.When I think of all the families that really live with kids who have cancer and this idiots lie it makes me angry.I know what Elf lived with before she died and to know someone tried to con people out of money by druging her kid just makes my ill.I pray that the little girl will be ok after all her mother has done to her.

Does anyone know where the little girl is now? It is so disgusting what her parents and grandmother did to her! What is wrong with people? It just makes me so sick!

I cannot even imagine what the poor girl is going through right now. Finding out the people who are suppose to love and protect you did this horrible thing.....ugh!I just hope she is with someone caring now and getting some serious counseling.

"Bond set for family in faked cancer scheme


A judge has set bond at 37-thousand-500 dollars apiece for the parents of a seven-year-old girl who was told she had leukemia as part of an apparent fund-raising hoax.

Thirty-five-year-old Teresa Milbrandt and 44-year-old Robert Milbrandt appeared in Urbana Municipal Court this morning via video link from jail.

They're charged with engaging in a pattern of corrupt activity, endangering children, theft and possession of criminal tools.

Police say Teresa Milbrandt shaved her daughter Hannah's head and gave her sleeping pills to trick the girl into thinking she was dying of cancer. Authorities say the Milbrandts collected more than ten-thousand dollars in donations from townspeople wanting to help Hannah.

Hannah's grandmother, 57-year-old Mary Russell, is charged with engaging in a pattern of corrupt activity and theft. Judge Susan Fornoff-Lippincott set her bond at 20-thousand dollars.

Hannah Milbrandt is currently in foster care."

I know many of us know the sadness and reality of having a sick child...and what these people did! omg! All for $10,000. You couldn't give me a million dollars to bring such sadness to one of my children. Never in my life could money take the place of one of my little Angels!!

Ya'll feel the same way that I do...I can't imagine causing so much pain to my child for any amount of money..look at how many parents lose their home, jobs, material possessions etc..because they HAVE a sick child that they'd do anything in the world for just even for a GLEAM of hope their life will be saved. Makes me ill.

That poor child. Children believe what their parents tell them, they are very impressionable. To bilk a community like that out of money. Don't these people have any scruples at all?

My thinking is this woman has no brains,morals, feelings, sense... Nothing...

How could you ever want to even pretend your child to be so ill.

So many people go thru this on a daily basis legitimatly and its a sad thing and this horrid woman takes it as a way to make a living ......
She better be lucky I am not the judge and jurry....
