Thumbs up CT'S JOE LIEBERMAN RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT

For those of you that remember, Joe Lieberman was Al Gore's running mate. He is a VERY GOOD MAN, very exciting news for our state!

(Stamford-WTNH/AP, Jan. 13, 2003 Updated 12:05 PM) _ Add Joe Lieberman's name to the growing list of Democratic presidential candidates. "I am a candidate for president of the United States, and I intend to win"

Senator Joe Lieberman Announces Candidacy for Presidency of the United States
January 13, 2003
Stamford High School, Stamford, Connecticut
(AS PREPARED FOR DELIVERY)

I wanted to come back home to Stamford today to make this announcement, because it is here that I came to appreciate the miracle of America.

It was here that my parents Henry and Marcia themselves children of immigrants -- worked their way into the American middle class and gave my sisters and me the opportunities they never had. And it was here that I first understood the power of the promise America makes to all its people that no matter who you are or where you start, if you work hard and play by the rules, you can go as far as your God-given talents will take you.

When I was growing up and going to school right here, we called that promise the American Dream. It defined our freedom, our opportunity, our strength. It set us apart in the world, but brought us together as a people, around our shared faith in an ever-brighter future.

Today the American Dream is in danger, threatened by terrorists and tyrants from abroad and a weak economy that makes it harder to live a better life here at home. For too many Americans the middle class is drifting out of reach. In fact, over the past two years, 2.8 million people have lost their jobs. And instead of joining the middle class, 1.3 million people have fallen into poverty.

I am confident that we as nation have what it takes to meet these challenges and renew the American Dream. We can make it as real for you students who are here today as it was for me and my generation. But that will only happen if our leaders are ready to lead, willing to fight for what's right for the American people, and able to rise above partisan politics to put our country first.

We must rise above partisan politics and put our country first to fix our economy and restore economic growth, because a strong middle class means a strong America.

We must rise above partisan politics to unite to defeat the threat of terrorism and make America safe again. We must never shrink from using American power to defend our ideals against evil in a time of war -- and we must never forget to use the power of our ideals as a force for good in the quest for peace.

We must rise above partisan politics if we are to heal the racial divide, not reopen old wounds, and give a new generation of immigrants their fair chance to live the American Dream.

We must rise above partisan politics and restore independence to the White House, not compromise our economic, environmental, or health security for political contributors or extreme ideologies.

We must rise above partisan politics and stand up for our values here at home, because family, responsibility and faith matter more than power, partisanship, and privilege.

Two years ago we were promised a better America. But that promise has not been kept.

Today I am ready to rise above partisan politics to fight for what's right for the American people. I am ready to protect their security, revive their economy, and uphold their values. I am ready to announce today I am running for President in 2004. And I intend to win.

This morning I will be filing the necessary papers to form a campaign committee, and I will then begin working to earn the support of the American people.

In the coming months, I want to convince them that I have the strength, the vision, and the values to lead our nation to higher and safer ground.

I want to talk with them about the tough fights I have waged before.

As a young man, I marched in Washington with Dr. King and I went to Mississippi to fight for the right of African-Americans to vote.

As my state's Attorney General, I stood with single moms to go after deadbeat dads -- and fought against oil companies that were trying to gouge consumers and corporate polluters who were spoiling our water and our air.

As a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, I have consistently supported a strong defense, our men and women in uniform, and the use of our mighty American military to protect our security and advance our values -- in the Gulf War, Bosnia, Kosovo, and now again in Iraq.

As a father and now a grandfather, I have taken on the entertainment industry for peddling sex and violence to our children -- and spoken up for parents who feel they are in competition with the popular culture to raise their children and give them the right values.

And as the Democratic nominee for Vice President in 2000, I was proud to join with Al Gore in a great fight for America's families and their future. And I am also proud to say that Al and I got a half million more votes than our opponents, and we actually got more votes than any Democratic ticket in history.

In this campaign, I will talk about the tough fights ahead. Strengthening homeland security while protecting Social Security. Making affordable health care available to every American. Fixing our failing schools. Restoring fiscal responsibility and expanding opportunity, with sensible tax cuts and sound investments that will bring back the prosperity of the Clinton-Gore era.

I intend to talk straight to the American people, and to show them that I am a different kind of Democrat. I will not hesitate to tell my friends when they are wrong -- and to agree with my opponents when they are right.

I know this will be a long journey across America for my family and me, and we look forward to it. Some mornings when I wake up, I may not know exactly where I am. But I promise you I will always know exactly who I am and what I stand for.

Every day along the way I will feel blessed by God to live in a land where our dreams can become real. And everyday I will remember what President Kennedy said, that here on earth, God's work must truly be our own.

My friends, we have great work to do to secure the hope of a better tomorrow for our beloved country. Let us begin here. Let us begin now. And let us begin together.

I like Joe too, so what's with all the protestors today? He seems like a decent honest man.

beats me

He IS a decent, honest man. His family is lovely, his wife, Hadassah would make a wonderful 1st lady

Throughout my public life — whether representing my community of New Haven, Connecticut in the state legislature, fighting for the people of my state as Attorney General, serving 14 years in the United States Senate, or running for Vice President in 2000 alongside Al Gore — I have dedicated myself to giving something back to the country that has given me so much.

I have done my best to honor the values — faith, family and freedom, equal opportunity and tolerance — that I learned from my parents, my teachers and my hometown. My father worked his way up from the back of a bakery truck to own his own liquor store. My mom, like my dad, is the child of immigrants. Together, they worked hard to earn the money to send me to college — the first in my family to go. From there, I went on to law school, and began serving the people of my state, in the State Senate, in 1971.

I’m proud of my record. As Connecticut’s Attorney General from 1983 to 1988, I stood with single moms against deadbeat dads, fought corporations that broke the law to prey on consumers, and prosecuted polluters to make them pay. And in the Senate over the last 14 years, I’ve continued to lead — guided not by partisan politics, but by my principles — and to fight for what’s right my constituents and my country. My priorities are spurring innovation and creating jobs, keeping our nation safe and secure, protecting our environment, improving our schools, expanding healthcare, and honoring our common values.

My wife Hadassah and I have four children – Matthew, Rebecca, Ethan, and Hana. Plus we are the grandparents of two beautiful girls named Tennessee and Willie. I want for them just what most any American wants for their family – a fair chance to live their dreams. That’s the promise of America. And that’s why I want to be President – I have been blessed to live the American Dream, and I want to do whatever I can to make it real for every citizen of this great land.

I'll have to do some research on him before I decide whether or not I like him.

I don't question whether or not he's a "good" man.. I question whether or not his views are in check with mine.. we'll see.

Thumbs down Go home, Joe!

Well, I've got to disagree. Before the 2000 election, I liked what I saw in Lieberman, despite me being of the conservative persuasion and he being very liberal. I like honest and straightforward people, and I thought he was of that variety. I was wishing that the tickets were Cheney/Bush and Lieberman/Gore instead of the other way around. But that election brought out some interesting words from him. I thought they were blatant, outright lies. I couldn't believe I was hearing what I was hearing! I figured he just was persuaded in the Clinton/Gore methods of twisting or distorting the truth to suit his own goals.

For example, in the text you posted above, he said "Two years ago we were promised a better America. But that promise has not been kept." Does he have a clue what happened on 9/11? Does he understand that priorities have to be changed to vanquish an enemy intent on our destruction? Does he think that the Clinton/Gore team left a thriving economy at their departure from the White House? Does he understand that the "booming economy" of the Clinton era was a false prosperity built on an overvalued stock market fed by stockbroker predators and greed? Does he still think that Gore invented the internet? Does he realize the incentive for rapid growth Gore pushed for the internet was the prime reason dot coms fueled the economy, but when reality didn't measure up to promises, the balloon burst, causing dot coms to fail, stock prices to crash and job losses across the country? Does he think that if he were in Bush's place he could do any better?

I would seriously doubt ANYONE could have done much better than Bush has handled this series of calamities. In this respect, Lieberman deserves a raspberry for his comment, in my opinion. He is trying to reduce a complex series of events to a "broken promise". He is attempting to capitalize on the stupidity of many Americans who will take his words at face value. Are we better off than we were during the Clinton administration? The simple answer is "NO". To attribute Clinton's booming economy to Clinton's policies can be easily done if someone just associates the condition of the nation with the occupier of the White House at the time. This simple association would make Bush look like an idiot, because the economy is struggling.

Those with a lot more insight will see what effects policies have over the long run. I can go out and buy several expensive cars and live high on the hog and it will LOOK like I'm doing well. But when those payments totally drain my bank accounts and I start having to borrow money at higher interest rates to make those payments, my REAL economic status would be evident. Initially, I look successful, but my practices eventually catch up to me and have a devastating effect on me. The same goes for the government. The flourishing economy during the Clinton administration made us LOOK like we were doing well, but when the bubble popped, suddenly we're left having to pay the piper.

So with Joe throwing out this distortion (as with his other lies during the election), I no longer have respect for him. I have great contempt for anyone trying to deceive other people. Isn't this what he's doing with such a statement?

I may be in CT but he is not the man for me. Sorry gals.
As an independent I try to choose who's views best fit mine.

Does anyone remember or have the link to that site where you rate what is important to you and it shows you which candidate is your best match? That was a great site. Really opened my eyes about my own beliefs.

Sorry I can't argee with you, because of personal issues I have with his family.

Do any of you actually know him or his family personally?

Well, I do. His sister and her family live in my town.

I won't go into it that much (I am trying to be careful what I say) except to say that I can't vote for a man who is pushing the family values issue (and has written several books on child support and absentee fathers) when he can't even look at his own family and they problems they have.

Also, if he can stand up for family values (which I personally know he lacks in this) what else is his falsely standing up for?

It really upsets me (and makes me angry) when I read how wonderful he thinks his family values are, because I KNOW for a fact they aren't!

He needs to stop and look at his own family before he goes pushing the family values ticket.

From what I have seen and heard he is one I would certainly consider. He got my vote when Al Gore was running and will again if he makes it. Dick Gebhart is going to run, and I'm taking a close look at what he's all about too. It's going to be a tough slate this time, but the best one will rise to the top.

I don't know him personally but I know someone who sends their daughter to the same Hebrew Day School that Lieberman's daughter goes to...she knows him and thinks the world of him. I also know his wife Hadassah's family was in the Holocaust.

MrsLisaP....what are you talking about? Since the man is running for president we will soon know everything about him anyhow.

I will leave you to your opinion, however I would like to correct some fallacies in your argument. First of all, Al Gore never said he invented the Internet, If you don't believe me, go to [Only registered and activated users can see links. Either login above or Register Now] for a full explanation of what was actually said. Second, the introduction of the Internet into businesses and homes has created hundreds of thousands of jobs and has made the American office and home more productive and efficient then ever before. Similar to the advances in science and productivity Kennedy's Space program gave us, the Internet was a very valuable investment for the country. Yes there were many companies that failed to cull some of this new money, but thousands of companies have used this technology as a catalyst to garner millions upon millions of dollars and still create wealth today on the backs of the Internet. An example is did you know Google made about 300 million last year?

Third, the high amounts of money flowing into Treasury during the Clinton Administration can be mostly attributed to the capital gains tax, a tax many Republicans wanted then and now to get rid of. Yes, these taxes were paid largely from stock winnings, but by taking out the tax now, as some in the current administration would like to do, would be financially devastating to our government.

Hebrew Day School has a WONDERFUL reputation
