Exclamation Need a DVD Question Answered Quickly Please Ü

Ok..we wanna get the "XXX" movie at Walmart (DVD)(IF it's still in stock)..I looked at the website and there's 2 listings for it...WHAT is the darn difference between Full Frame and Widescreen? Can ya tell we're a bit new to the DVD purchasing? LOL! I'd rather know what I want exactly BEFORE we get into the store. We're using the PS2 for viewing...altho we wanna get a DVD player probably in the next month or so since they are so darn cheap now. Thanks in advance!

Full screen takes up the full screen on you TV.
Widescreen has a black strip at the top and bottom of the picture.
But... it spose to be a wider view of the movie.??
Personally.... I find the widescreen to be annoying.
I always try to buy the full screen when available.

THANK-YOU! I THOUGHT widescreen had the blacked out areas, but then I thought it sounded kinda stupid to use that word if it had blacked out areas..then adding full screen just confused me more! LOL! Well, they are listed for the same price ($14.31 I thought this was cheap) so hopefully they'll have the full screen version! Again thanks so much for the lightning fast reply

Fullscreen is also called "pan & scan". Most movies were filmed to fit on movie screen theatres which are proportioned wider than most older TV sets. To get the full picture on a normal TV and to maintain proportions, widescreen images will have the black bars on top and bottom...but you'll see the ENTIRE image filmed, albeit smaller.

"Normal" TVs have a display ratio of 4:3 - that is if the picture tube is 4' wide, it will be 3' tall. Widescreen TVs have a display ratio of 16:9, so a 4' wide image will be only 2.25 feet high.

Fullscreen DVDs will have that movie image edited so that it fills the entire screen of "normal" TV sets. They actually cut out portions of the images you'd see in widescreen. The center of attention on screen is where they'll focus on, chopping off portions on either the left or right of it. Thus, they "pan and scan" the original image.

If you have a smaller 4:3 TV set, the widescreen format may be annoying and provide too small an image, but you'll see the image as it was intended to be viewed. If you have a large rear-projection screen, plasma or widescreen CRT, go with the widescreen!

Here's an example of what you might see on a fullscreen DVD image:

Here's the full widescreen image:

So, to fit the widescreen image on a 4:3 set and to keep proportions the same, you have to shrink the image width-wise, but that leaves the black bars on top and bottom. Here's how much smaller it would be:

The widescreen image is a photograph of one of my DVDs playing. I did my own "pan and scan" editing on that image to demonstrate what happens. The black lines on the sides of the widescreen image are actually the edges (bevel) of my display.

Here's another example...a widescreen image from Airplane!:

Airplane! has a lot of information going on in the background that is an integral part of the movie. To lose that information by going with a fullscreen edition is (IMO) a mistake.

Remember, you'll probably replace your TV in a couple of years and if you have fullscreen DVDs instead of widescreen, you may regret it. It doesn't take long to rack up a several hundred dollar inventory of DVDs at $15 to $20 a pop! Live with the bars and look to the future!

We only had the option of full screen since that's all the store had in stock. We have a big screen TV (NOT tube) and two smaller (25"), one of which is in the boys room so we figured chances are pretty good that they'd watch the DVDs in there as well. Thanks for all of the help. BTW, the B&M Walmart's price for "XXX" is $19.78 (w/ tax $20.97)...kids are getting their baths early so we can watch it

LMAO..yeah, well the big screen was purchased in 95 (maybe it was Jan. of 96) so it's ancient....kinda like a PC, walk out the door with the darn thing and there's a newer model taking it's place..LOL!
