Question the good stuff, expensive cookware

Hi all. Hope everyone had a great Xmas.

I need some advice. I've been thinking of buying a few pieces of GOOD cookware, you know KitchenAid, Calphalon, etc.... Maybe a skillet or two. Definantly do not want to buy a set. I enjoy using Chicago Metallic Professional for bakeware... I was wondering if anyone good provide some advice about their experiences using professional cookware and what brands they liked.....

Thanks and y'all havea good day,
Bethie

I like anything Oxo... but I think they're mainly utensils...

and my cookware that I've been using for 17 years and still looks brand new is Revere...I know that' s not a 'professional' cookware set, but it has really stood the test of time for our family. Can't beat the quality.

Hi Bethie!

I have a few pieces of Calphalon like this one:
[Only registered and activated users can see links. Either login above or Register Now]

I have had these for a year, use them often, and they look brand new. The only drawback with some of the pieces such as this one is that the handles get hot. I prefer not to have to use a potholder all the time...especially for the lid. I know there are some calphalon lines that have the cool touch handles that would be better IMO. You may also prefer long handles to these short ones. The quality is great.

Make sure you get the correct sizes. I did somehow order one pot that was definitely smaller than I had anticipated.

I also have a Farberware stock pot that I love. I use it every day. I have a large Calphalon pot, but the Farberware pot works better for me. Farberware can be cheaper I think. I only use the stockpot for soups and pasta so I don't have experience with Farberware and "sticking". There is little sticking if any with the Calphalon.

Years ago I started with TFal cookware. For the price it was actually good, but in the long run it didn't last with the amount of cooking that I do.

I also have 2 wok style frying pans...deeper than most frying pans...I really love one of them that has been a long lasting pan. On the bottom it says "Wearever" and I think I paid $10 for it. If I am not mistaken I think this is a cheap brand...sure didn't cost much..lol...but it has been very nice, too. You just never can tell!

I think buying pieces is the way to go also. You get just what you will use.

Good luck!

I have Cuisinart and Revere with the copper bottoms. I love them both, but I think the favorite that I have is the Paul Richard or something like that. It's dirt cheap but it works great, especially for stuff that you cook a little faster, like boiling potatoes and pasta. It seems the thicker more expensive ones take longer.

If you are looking for something like a cookie sheet or cake pan I HIGHLY recommend stonewear. I know you can get it by pampered chef, thats the only stuff I have used so far. I have a huge casserole dish, and a huge pizza stone, and I LOVE THEM!!
I use both as cookie sheets all the time, your cookies will not burn. I bake my potato ham casserole, and it use to be a nightmare to clean the dish, but these dishes are so easy.

I did learn the hard way that they have to be seasoned, and until they are you have to spray them lightly with pam. I can not believe the difference there is in all the food I cook on them.

I also have a calphalon stock pot set, and some t-fal. I think my t-fal pots heat faster, but they do not last as long, and the teflon gets feathery.

I am still trying to buy my electric griddle. I want a big one, and have found it the cheapest at brandsmall. But that site gets crappy reviews!

just a word of advice...i know you are not looking for a set, but it might serve you better to get a set

often it is the same price to get a set of 4 or 5 pots and pans...and you can get them for the same price you would pay for 2 pieces of the same brand.

my mom got a calphlon pan and pot. i later found a calphalon set that had those two pieces in it plus two others for only $10 more. just keep an eye out...

I just HAD to have a set of TFal pots/pans..my MIL got them for me I believe 2 or 3 years ago..uhhhh...BIG let down. The only way I see TFal performance living up to the "as seen on TV" is if you would record/tape the darn info commercial and keep replaying it. Give me a Walmart special any day! LOL! We're a family of 5 and there's oodles of cooking/baking going on during the period of just a day, I would never recommend TFal to anyone I remotely liked! LOL!

I got a set of stainless steel Farberware pots and pans when I got married 27 years ago, and I'm still using them. They still look almost as good as the day I got them (the black handles might be faded a bit). They're heavy, flat-bottomed, and better than anything I've tried since. And my mom still has HERS, and I know they're at least 40 years old.

Farberware also makes aluminum cookware, but from what I've heard, it's horrible. If you go with Farberware, make sure it's the stainless steel!

I am dying to get more Calphalon. I have a piece or two and used to cook with it all the time when an old roommate had a full set. Get the regular hard anodized type, not the nonstick. Anything with a nonstick layer in my opinion will fall apart eventually. It's not "nonstick" but stuff doesn't stick to it all that much anyway. Super easy to clean. I really wish I had more, but with a baby on the way, it's just not in the budget. Nor is it a high priority.

I agree with the stoneware instead of regular bakeware. I'm a huge Pampered Chef fan and have TONS of baking stones. I tend to burn stuff I bake, and the stones REALLY help prevent that. And they have a 3 year warranty, so when hubby drops one and breaks it, it's not a big deal. lol. (It's no questions asked. Just send 'em your receipt and a piece of the stone.) Host a party and get one cheap or free. My first stone was free after having a party with only 2 people at it. Not a bad deal if you ask me.

Jackie

I purchased the Kitchenaid Gourmet Essentials Stainless Steel set last year from Amazon.com Until that time I had been cooking on T-Fal and Revereware. I would agree with everyone about the T-Fal....although hubby is thrilled with my cast offs for his candlemaking and heating lead for his reloading stuff...

I really like the Kitchenaid set...it is stainless steel...so for me it has taken a little bit to get used to not cooking on a non-stick surface...my first attempt at fried eggs turned into scrambled eggs!! But, now that I have cooked with it for awhile I really am glad that I got it. I know that Amazon doesn't sell the Gourmet Essentials sets anymore, but I believe that Kohls still does. This set is the "downline" of Kitchenaids really high-end stainless. I have NO experience with that at all...

I also still cook on the Revereware...I have two of the stockpots and a 10" fry pan that I really like...it is the copper bottom stuff.

When I was researching what to buy last year, Hubby teased that I spent more time researching cookware than I did researching "important" things....well, we can see that his priorities are off....LOL!! Good luck with your choice...remember that January/February is when cookware lines tend to go on sale...(I have no idea why, but that is what Consumer Reports said).

I looked up my past orders from Amazon and I had ordered Calphalon Dec.30th. I have never seen the prices as low as when I had ordered. It was a stroke of luck that I got them that day. I bought one 8 qt. Calphalon pot for $29.99 and right now it is $59.99! Of course, I had to buy a few other pieces to avoid shipping charges that would most certainly have killed the deal. Now they have the $25 super saver shipping which is great! So anyway, my point is that you should watch the Amazon prices because they do go up and down. You CAN buy Calphalon for a decent price. I wouldn't pay very much attention to the list price. I'm sure they are inflated. I would think the prices fall after the holidays because people are no longer rushing to buy cookware for their holiday entertaining. ? Isn't it the same with furniture? Everyone wants nice furniture when the company comes so out of any time of the year they shop in the fall...before Thanksgiving and xmas.

Here is a nice deal on Farberware, too.

ALL-CLAD

I personally prefer the all-clad line of pots and pans. And I definitely agree, stay away from the nonstick unless you have to have it. I have one pan that is non-stick that I use for things like eggs, but for the most part I don't use it often.

Right now macy's is having some sort of stock up and save sale - i saw several pots marked at good prices.....there is stuff in the regular sale area and then more in the clearance.

I can't recommend circulon personally, but i have heard good things about it and this set looks nice for the price....

I looked long and hard before buying new cookware in October. I finally settled on a stainless steel Tramontina set and I LOVE it! It was about $80 (I think) at Walmart.
