I got an e-mail from e-bay saying this scam was out and it was sent to most of their members. In most cases if you are a member of a website they are not going to e-mail you and ask for any information. If they do go to the site yourself and don't use the link to make sure you are at the right site.

Thanks, Mom2

Just out of curiosity, what kind of feedback rating do you have? I'm just wondering if they target people with extremely good ratings in order to make their scam work better. It'd be SO easy for eBay to catch these people, but I guess they really don't care.

The email from ebay that I got said they already shut them scammers down. I just changed my screen name so the ratings are starting all over for me. I had not used the old name in forever and I like cujo0123 better. I have only sold one thing since I changed my name so they might not have been able to get my info. I never got an e-mail from the scammers.

I never received anything from EBAY warning me about the scam. BUT it was easy to figure this one out especially after I got the Paypal one.
I have a perfect record with EBAY. I did notify them also about this person. I hadn't heard of this one before. The link it sent me to wanted everything! Talk about Idenity Fraud!! Yikes!!
JUST BEWARE!!! You can usually tell because as you run your mouse over the link, the "real" link appears at the bottom of your scree on the gray area.

It's happening AGAIN!

I got this notice in my inbox this morning:

We are currently performing regular maintenance of our security measures. Protecting the security of your eBay account is our primary concern, and we apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. Please confirm your account ownership by entering the information below.

I posted to eBay's message board (someone else had posted to it, too). If you get a similar email, DO NOT respond to it unless you like living dangerously!

Question

I can't figure out who's dumber, the people who send that junk out or the people who give their info out.

Yikes! I knew this had been going on but assumed it was taken care of.

I guess as soon as they figure this one out there will be another one to take it's place.

Exclamation

I just heard on the news tonight that some hackers from UNC-Charlotte hacked into e-bay to get personal information. Watch your account info for a while just in case.

Does E-bat not care about our privacy/security?

I think they do care but the problem is so huge that it is really impossible to protect everyone.

Probably the best they can do at this point is to keep everyone alerted as to what is happening while they try and get a handle on it.

It's worse than spam mail, <duh, obviously> but it just keeps growing like that...KWIM?

I would advise anyone who thinks they may have replied to this email to change their Ebay user name and password, cancel any credit card they may have given info on.... contact any bank you may have given info on, and tell them not to approve any electronic transfers.

It's so scary to think how easy it might be for someone to fool you and get personal info.

Is this the scam where they try to use Ebay user names who have good feedback, to try and sell things under their name?

Yup. I bet they just blanket a bunch of eBay users. When they get responses, they see if the user ID/password combo works. My guess is they'd then sell these to other people to work the scams. IDs with a lot of positive feedback (i.e. power sellers) would probably command a higher price. IDs like mine with only 43 positives to date probably wouldn't be as valuable, but still worth it for a small scam.

Here's a link to an article about this:

[Only registered and activated users can see links. Either login above or Register Now]

My opinion is that I bet A LOT of people probably responded to this email. If they acted fast enough to cancel credit card, report it to their bank, ect.....they probably reduced their chance of identity fraud by a lot. It's the people who don't change accounts, ect. that I would be worried about.

Unfortunately, it's way too easy for people to get your SSN, mother's maiden name, ect. Health insurance cards, for example, often have the insured's SSN number on it, and often by obituaries they can figure out maiden names. And how many times do you have to show your Driver's License to someone when you write a check, etc.? And can you only imagine what they could get from your mail?

Whoever did this would probably try for the ones who info seems to be correct right off, instead of going through every one. It's probably a process of illimination for them.
