Unhappy Help! My computer has problems, does anyone out there have the same problems?

I could be typing an E-mail and the darn thing just freezes, can't get out of it, the only way is by shutting the whole computer down. It has been making a clicking noise. My DH and I figure it's a computer chip, but, we can't figure out which one 'cause everytime he tries to work on it, the computer freezes up. Has anyone had similar problems and what was the cause? I am on our old computer, a bit of a pain, it's so slow.

It could be many things. If I were you, I'd reduce the computer to the basics: one memory chip, a floppy, graphics card and hard drive. Remove all other cards carefully, avoiding static discharge. If everything then works OK, then power it off and add back in one component (audio card, etc.). Repeat the process until either it fails or everything's added back in. It could be even something as simple as the power supply or a bad memory strip. If it fails in the very basic configuration and you have multiple memory cards, swap cards to see if that makes a difference. It's a tedious process.

What kind of computer is it (speed, processor), what cards do you have in it, what disk drives, how much memory on how many memory cards? How old is it and do you have any test equipment (voltmeter)? Does your BIOS have any kind of "health check" where it shows you various voltages and temperatures?

Try going to [Only registered and activated users can see links. Either login above or Register Now] and running a diagnostic. That gives fixes when it finds out problems. VERY helpful and very easy.

It is most likely to be that your machine is running low on system resources, you may have a few hardware devices that are eating up your sources. What you can try to do is take out any hardware device that is not crucial to your system in order to function and do just like jeskibuff said. Or you can disable devices you no longer use or need in the device manager and see what happens. What Operating system are you running and what machine brand is it?
