Anybody else annoyed with stores wanting personal info for returns?

I buy a lot of stuff for my mother and end up returning a lot. She stays sick in the bed a lot so when I see something I think she might like I'll buy it. Sometimes is just drives me nuts to have to fill out my name, address, phone number, and email. I can understand why they want it, but it still drives me nuts to give them my info. I never give them my real phone number, I don't think it's any of their business and who knows who they may sell the info to.
I love the fact that when I return something at kohls they usually just tell me to sign it, I don't have to fill out all the info.

Something happened the other day that really made me mad. I was going to complain, but I never did. I was in JoAnns Fabrics. They had a Halloween section in the store that said Halloween 90% off and then gave a little chart to show what prices would now be. I purchased a few things without adding up my total in my head like I normally do. At the register I did think the total was a little high, but since I hadn't added up before hand I didn't say anything. Leaving the store I looked at the receipt and discovered I'd been charged full price ($1.98 ) for a pack of halloween glitter (said halloween on the pack and had pics of cats, witches, and pumpkins). I didn't catch it at the register even though I do pay attention to how stuff rings up, but JoAnns has a wierd register. It quickly flashes the original price and then the clearance price. So when they scan stuff fast it can be confuse when watching all those prices flashing really quickly.
I go back in and ask "shouldn't this have rang up 19 cents? She looked and the receipt and said "Only Spooky Hollow stuff is 90% off and this doesn't say Spooky Hollow."
First of all the signs say Halloween 90% off, not Spooky Hollow Halloween 90%. Second I'd already bought some other halloween stuff that rang up 90% off that wasn't marked Spooky Hollow.
From her attitude I decided arguing was going to do any good and decided not to even mention those things. I just told her to return it. She hands me the receipt wanting name, address, and phone number.
I asked her what if I don't want to give you my info?
She said she was required to get it and couldn't give me my money back until I filled it out.
I said, Let me get this straight, your store puts something in the 90% Halloween section that is Halloween, but isn't 90%. Your store makes a mistake and requires my info to fix it?
She said yes.
I filled it out, but I was so furious about having to do it.

I don't think JoAnns should have any right to make a error in what they charge a customer and then DEMAND the customers personal info before they will refund the money. THEY made a mistake, it wasn't like I was returning for any old reason. I was only returning because of their mistake!

I agree, I don't like it either. I hardly return things, but one of these days I'm going to say something along the lines of ... "You didn't ask for my information to sell it to me, so I don't think it's right that you do it when I want my money back." Rite Aid did this last month when I returned and item and BOUGHT IT BACK right then and there. Sheesh.

Not to worry. It won't be too much longer into the future when we'll all be barcoded. Stores will just scan our fingerprints or something. So no more filling out forms.

Scary, huh. And the technology really isn't that far off. Then there'll be no keeping personal info personal. UGH.

I hear that they do this so that there is proof that they actually refunded the money to a real person, rather than just taking it out and putting it in their pocket. I've even gotten a call once, from a store I had returned something expensive to, to make sure I really HAD returned it. So I can handle their request for information for returns.

What I CAN'T stand is when they ask for your telephone number (or your zip code) when they sell you something! If it's a young guy, I always say, "You dog! I'm married, and I'm MUCH too old for you!" If it's anyone else, I usually say, "I don't like to give that info out, 'cause I'm on 'America's Most Wanted!'" That usually gets them off my case. If not, I "just say No!"
