HELP!! Can anyone recommend any remedies to quiet a cough so I CAN SLEEP?

Okay, this is a serious question. My family and I have been passing around assorted viruses for over two weeks now. THIS TIME AROUND I got something back that I haven't had in ages, a heavy cold with loads of congestion, but a fever for only two days. It started on Monday, with a really sore throat and ultra-stuffy nose. I have used NINE, yes NINE boxes of tissues since then(sorry, trees! ), not to forget my ears get clogged up every time I cough or blow my poor, sore nose.

BUT this mess now has me coughing up a storm. I can't even sleep five minutes at night because the moment I try to lay down(even using 3 or 4 pillows)I cough myself crazy. I hurt so much from the coughing and over-the counter cough medicines do not do a thing..I am allergic to codeine. I have tried honey and lemon tea, a humidifier, inhaling steam, and NOTHING WORKS, Halls cough drops give me temporary relief. I am so sleep deprived that I am afraid I will NEVER get well.

PLEASE, does anyone have any remedies that have worked for them? I WILL TRY JUST ABOUT ANYTHING!

Sorry for the complaining, but I DO NEED HELP!!!

I'd go to the doc. I had a similar virus last year and had similar problems with coughing, and the only thing that cleared it up was prescription medication (Like you, I had tried everything... vaporizer and all kinds of OTC stuff). I don't recalll what the doctor prescribed, but it worked very quickly and I could finally sleep without coughing my brains out!

I can't take penicillin or any derivatives, sulfa, tetracycine, or bactrim. Only thing that I can BARELY tolerate is vibramycin..THAT only makes me nauseated and dizzy. SO I am stuck to fight this myself......but thanks for your sincere words of advice gmvalentine!

Sorry that you are feeling so bad...

This may sound weird but when I have a nighttime cough like that, I lay on my back, propped up with pillows (almost to a sitting postion) and sip on really really cold icewater until the urge to cough goes away.

I sleept in my recliner(sp) when I had it.
It is a real bad one.
Nyquil is good and triamentic has a good nite time
cough one also.

WOW! You guys are the best...I need to try something else, will do the ice water thing, already tried triaminic(no go). The Nyquil allowed me to sleep for about 2 1/2 hours, best yet, but it made me queasy so forget that. WISH I was not so ridiculously senistive to medications!

I came in here to suggest NyQuil also...guess that one is already checked off the list...LOL! It kicks my butt so I don't take it unless I am REALLY having a hard time. I also sleep in almost a sitting position, but warm liquids help me. Cold liquids make my throat tickles causing me to cough...LOL! How about some good ole Vicksa Vapor (rub or steam vapor)?
