| WalMart SuperCenter discussion This company has been on my mind alot lately. They just opened up a new one about 6 miles from an existing one. Before I give my opinion, what is your first impression of WalMart as a whole? Not the products they offer but the way the company does business. I will say that my opinion is negative although I still shop there. I have never worked there either and never plan to, so I would also like to hear from people who work there or have worked there. Any opinions on any topic about WalMart would be fine too, good experiences, bad experiences, etc. __________________ Check out these [Only registered and activated users can see links. | I worked there, starting out as a stocker, and was put in a cashiers position with out asking, and a cut in hours.. they treat their people there like crud..but then again, alot of people that work there loves it..so it's in the eye of the beholder I suppose... and some cashiers are ok, depending on what cs rep was working at that moment........ i do notice i cashier profile when i use tons of coupons..cause one person just goes right through my coupons, and the next cashier says there's a limit of 3 coupons per like item (they tried pushing that off on me when i know their coupon policy LOL), or just rude cashiers.. i know which ones to avoid... but most of the time it's ok to shop. I will never work there again..not that i can since i walked off anyway LOL.__________________ Check out these [Only registered and activated users can see links. | i worked there for a little while and they do pay well. i mean better than a lot of retail places. and you get stock in the company too. benefits can be pretty good. a lot of older people work there strictly for the benefits. our store is a regular walmart although i believe they are planning on a supercenter to replace it soon. i know there are mixed opinions on walmart. it has driven many a mom-n-pop store out of business. but its about the only place i shop. why wouldnt you? good products good price. __________________ Check out these [Only registered and activated users can see links. | I don't like how WalMart runs the mom and pop stores away either. They say they don't. I watched documentary on Wal Mart a couple of years ago.. but they failed to sway my opinion. As for my area though, the mom and pop stores were long gone anyway and Wal Mart brought in jobs that were needed. I don't like the meat department and dairy department at ours because there is always a ton of stuff that is outdated. As for the service.. I've found that it usually exceeds other stores.. and if not.. go to a manager because in my experience.. every manager I have encountered does have the customer is always right mannerism. __________________ Check out these [Only registered and activated users can see links. | many state attorney generals are investigating Wal Mart for repeatedly "losing" peoples overtime hours. The stock options only meant something if you got in on the ground floor. At one time, when it was first coming up, Sam Walton treated people good, automatically paid time and a half for Sunday work (even if you didn't have more than 40 hours that week). This is from reading articles, talking to people that work there. Of course, I shop there, its cheap. __________________ Check out these [Only registered and activated users can see links. | I shop there only because it is convenient since they are open 24 hours. I have found here in our town though that not all of their prices are that great. A locally owned grocer here in town beats them when it comes to meat prices. As well as canned goods. I worked there when I was in college and hated every minute of it. (I helped stock and open the 1st super wal-mart in our town) The managers treated the employees like crap. The pay was terrible and the hours were even worse..........they had such a high turn over rate and when someone quit or decided to not come in that those working ended up having to stay......they never asked they just made you. I didn't think that was right and I never noticed any difference on my pay. I am sure they managed to get out of paying overtime somehow. So I don't have a good opinion of Wal-Mart but what can you do? They monopolize just about everything and they don't treat their employees very well. __________________ Check out these [Only registered and activated users can see links. | I refuse to shop at my local walmart. They have a perfectly fine store with lots of empty land surrounding it. 2 years ago they announced they were closing the one they have to build a Supecenter 3 miles down the road. They were putting it in the worst location in town for traffic congestion (a major problem in a summer resort area) and expectiing the town (i.e. local citizens) to foot the bill for the roads that needed upgrading. There would have been a 14 acre parking lot with 24 hour a day flood lights next to Birdsacre Sanctuary. This sanctuary is a jewel in which many species that are stressed find an intown habitat and they do rehabilitation for wild birds that have been injured. This would have killed this beautiful spot and many local residents spoke out against it. What was really dirty was that 1 city councillor had a personal stake in the land they were going to buy (he abstained - big deal!) and the city manager is part of the same family. Boy was the fix in. The only thing that stopped it was the fact that the Maine DOT did real traffic studies, not the joke the city had done, and presented Walmart with a list of what they would be responsible for in road upgrades and refused to saddle the residents of Maine with the price tag. Walmart dropped the plan but made it clear it was still a future option. I wish somebody would put a Superstore in the backyards of the board of directore of this foul, bullying neighbor and see how they like it. (guess where I stood on the debate - they really did not like seeing me at town counsel meetings )__________________ Check out these [Only registered and activated users can see links. | Wow! I'm really glad you stuck up for those that can't stick up for themselves, Fractal! Those poor birds would have suffered some sort of consequence, I'm sure. I guess the thing I hate about WalMart is they come in and just take over a town. Small towns get hit the hardest. There's no small town feeling going on after a WalMart moves in. All you see is this big giant parking lot, which are way too big to begin with in my opinion, and lights that light up the sky more than the streetlights do. All the little businesses suffer and go out of business. Yes, their prices are cheap and they are more convenient but I am actually kinda sick of Walmart. They built a WalMart Supercenter at the end of our road replacing the regular WalMart that is right across the street. In doing that, the city extended the city limits to the outer edge of the new WalMarts property which runs along one side of our road. We are only 10 feet from having to be in the city limits. Us being in the city limits means we will be paying higher taxes and have to hook up to city water and sewer at our expense. So in the next few years, someone else will probably come along and build next to WalMart for the traffic it receives and the city will once again move the city limits in order to gain the taxes they would make off that business and put us within the city limits. In just under a year, all the little businesses that were around the regular WalMart are gone. New traffic lights were put in and the streets were reconditioned in front of the new SuperCenter. I wonder if the city paid for the light and road improvements and extended the city limits to compensate for the bill? I'm sick of everytime someone is looking for something, the first thing out of everyone's mouth is "I bet Walmart has it." There's no competition anymore. No one can beat WalMarts prices. But if you don't like WalMarts way of doing things, where else are you gonna shop since they've run everyone else off? I dunno....I'm just kinda rambling here...... __________________ Check out these [Only registered and activated users can see links. | Before we moved, wal-mart was about the only place I did Shop, but since we are here, every store you can think of is close but a super wal-mart, I think I have been to wal-mart 3 times and k-mart once, I go to the dollar store and the dollar tree or just don't buy anything. Been to target a few times, because they were the only ones that had the uniforms for my kids school. I have had my share of rude cashiers at wal-mart but that is just about any place you go these days unless its realy upscale shop and then some of those can be arses! So I guess I will give super wal-mart a 7 on the 1 to 10 scale and the wal-mart a 5. I shop for deals and if wal-mart does not have one going on someone most likely does. I can say I will not be shoping at Target for x-mas cause they no longer price match, to me target is worse than wal-mart. IMHO, anways, oh I am rambling on, lol. Goona run out before I talk yalls ears off. __________________ Check out these [Only registered and activated users can see links. | Well, I'm going against the majority who have posted here, but I like WalMart. It's there when you're on the road & would otherwise not be able to find something you need - like windshield wipers in the middle of a rain storm or a pair of sandals when the weather suddenly turned HOT. I also live in a small town. We're too small for a Super Walmart, but we do have a regular one. It's off on one end of town - away from the local smaller mom & pop stores that are downtown and away from the mall. Yes, it does well & I suppose that there might be a few more mom & pop stores if it went away, but the prices would also go up for us and I wouldn't like that. Our downtown is thriving, so it's not hurting the smaller local stores and since ours doesn't have a grocery store, it's not competing in that market (although, the competition wouldn't hurt since the one good supermarket here has none). Our DD also works at Walmart. She was recently promoted to asst store manager & she loves it there. She only had one job before she started at Walmart & that one only lasted days because she really hated it. She likes the fact that she can adjust her hours as necessary for school and she can move to almost anywhere in the US and have a job. I'd think that it would be like working anywhere though - get good management in & you'll have happy employees. If you're unlucky and have bad managers, the employees will be unhappy as well. And the employee discount doesn't hurt either. ![]() __________________ [Only registered and activated users can see links. | Based on my experiences at 5 Wal-Marts/Supercenters around where we live which I shop at regularly, and quite a few I've shopped at in Florida and New York... Overall, for prices/clearances, I like Wal-Mart. Even with the hassles I lots of times have to go through to get the good prices. But for cashiers/CS Reps, I think that they need to TRAIN or re-train the majority of them so that they will know how to interact with the customers without making the customer walk away upset with Wal-Mart... Which I have had happen on numerous occasions. I find that Wal-Mart in general does not do a good job of marking down clearance/sale prices in the computer system; and their so called "if the item rings up at the wrong price we will give you $3 off that item, or the item for free if it costs less then a $1" policy...no way! I have items ring up at higher then advertised/marked prices all the time, and I have had the "wrong price policy" given to me I think 4 times. They say that it's automatic, but a certain code must need to be put in to get it automatically, and they never seem to put in that code... I really do not like their photo studios due to the fact that I had my son's pictures taken in mid-June (I bought a lot more then just their advertised picture package too!) and I was not able to get my photos picked up until the last week of AUGUST!!! Every time I went in to pay/pick them up...there wasn't anyone on duty, or they were closed even though their posted hours said they were supposed to be open. I even called to set an appointment to pick them up, got there and no one was there/they were closed! And Salem is getting a new Supercenter Wal-Mart, it should be open for business sometime between January and March... The inconvience of having the main road into Salem from our house "under construction" on and off for the last how many months!!! ARGH!!! I really hope that there will be a lot of good deals waiting for me there to make up for it all!!! | I have a love/hate relationship with WalMart. They came into our town and just KILLED so many businesses. They were first in the mall and then decided to build a supercenter a little ways from the mall. They stayed at the mall just long enough to get a ton of new business attrated and a ton of new stores opened up. When they moved, half the stores in the mall went out of business. I really hate how they treat their employees and the fact that they can't seem to train but one employee per store on coupon use. I have so much trouble with them that I would choose to shop somewhere else, but I just can't afford it. When it comes down to the things I can't get cheap with coupons, WalMart's price is sometimes half (or even less) of what other stores in town charge. I can't afford not to shop at WalMart. __________________ [Only registered and activated users can see links. | we only have a regular walmart in my town. i also cannot afford to NOT shop at walmart. their prices are just so good. and the food that they do have at our walmart...although it's a small selection...are so well priced. for example, a box of folgers cafe latte is over $4 in our grocery store and it's $1 and some change at walmart...put that with a $1 coupon and it's under a dollar. our walmart is also a bit away from downtown, so the mom and pop shops are still doing pretty well. well see what happens in the future... __________________ [Only registered and activated users can see links. | Would you believe that there isn't a SINGLE WalMart in the City of Chicago. The closest one is is one of the suburbs. The prices were good, but I wasn't all that pleased. It was just as disorganized as our K-Mart. The "old guy" at the door was pretty grouchy, especially to teenagers. Incovenient to get to... I wish they would build one in the city though!!! -Matt __________________ [Only registered and activated users can see links.
