Do you like leather or cloth couches?

If you read my nasty couch post you know we're thinking about getting a new couch. Someone posted that I should get leather, since it cleans up easily with kids. It's funny because last night my DH and I were having a funny conversation - he likes leather and I like cloth. I don't like the way leather feels if you're at all sweating and you stick to it. (We live in Arizona).

DH thinks that if money were not an issue people would choose leather couches over cloth. I don't think I would. So what do you guys think. Part of our decision is based on what visitors would prefer because we like entertaining and having friends over, so we need a public opinion.

Would you prefer to sit on a leather couch or a cloth couch?

Leather is nice for formal time, but for couch potato time it has to be cloth!

Cloth........I don't like leather because like you mentioned when you are hot you stick to it and I also don't like the 'noise' when you move around. Not to mention that leather is easier to puncture and more noticeable when it is.

If you get a cloth couch though that has been scotch-guarded then the kid issue should be ok........the scotch guard helps clean up spills easier.

some kinds of leather you don't stick as much. They hold up though, at my brothers house theres a couch that looks great, its been subjected to various spills and leakages by toddlers, but it wipes off

I prefer leather definitely. We have 3 kids and went through probably 3 fabric covered couches before we purchased leather. Just wipe them off with a cloth and they are as good as new. We have never had problems with punctures or tears.

From a maintenance standpoint, choose leather. But, strictly from a comfort standpoint, you might be happier with cloth.

I wouldn't chose leather over cloth. I'm not a big fan of leather couches for many of the reasons listed above.

I have 2 little ones, and with the scotch guard I don't worry too much about spills, they clean up pretty easily.

Our best friends have a leather couch and loveseat because they breed/show cats and needed something that the cats would not scratch. I know that they paid a lot for them but they are the most comfortable couches that I have ever sat on! I thought that they would be sticky in the summer (we are in Texas), but they never have. They don't make a lot of noise either. I have even slept on them with no problems. I would say that if you can afford a really good leather couch, get one.

One more think to consider...
Since you live in AZ your family may wear sunscreen frequently. A neighbor just bought a leather sofa and told me the only drawback was making sure the kids didn't sit on it after they had been swimming, since the salesperson told her sunscreen would damage the leather.

We're always had cloth (just assumed they were more practical with kiddies), mom has a leather (comfy).
Just bought a new sofa a couple of months back, very soft (almost like a brushed suede/leather)

Here's what the description says:
Enjoy the velvety finish. Lose yourself in its elegance. Experience a new luxurious softness. Dreamfibre will also surprise you with its strength, resistance to stains, and ease of cleaning. Dreamfibre brings every corner of your home to life.

So far so good with two kids and a 65lb dog

Hey, good luck!

We love our new comfy leather couch! Only drawback is in the cooler months, it sure is cold to sit on. But, we've remedied that and use a throw on the seats. Leather couches, very cool in the summer. You will have to use a leather cleaner and conditioner on it every now and then, but it rarely needs it. Go with your heart, whatever you prefer.

My in laws have a GORGEOUS soft leather peach sofa and loveseat. I would have thought...NO WAY IN MY HOUSE...mercy, it is REALLY comfy and doesn't really do all of that embarrassing noise. Now my SIL has a leather sofa also and LORD I HATE THAT THING!!!!! It's the epitomy of the farting wannabe, sticky in warm weather and I know they're already had a couple of small punctures in it. My SIL has 3 kids, BUT you have to understand that she is a COMPLETE neat freak and takes EXTREME care of everything she has. She STILL blames our sweet BIL for this purchase..LOL!
I have owned ONE brand new living room set and it was cloth. The only thing I can not stand at all is that tweed type grain fabric. It snags and totally sucks when it comes to ez clean-up.

leather is great for clean up plus with dogs the hair doesnt stick but I hate the sticky thing too. I would prefer cloth.

We have the same issues at my house he likes the leather.
GOOD LUCK AND HAPPY HUNTING.

My local sams club always has really nice leather sofas at a good price.

Thumbs up

We just bought a whole new leather set for our livingroom this summer and LOVE it!!! It is the most comfortable furniture I have ever owned. It was VERY expensive, but well worth the money. If you buy the good stuff it does not make noise and it breathes so nobody will stick to it. I have even taken a few LOOONNGG naps on the couch. I fell asleep there the other night and ended up sleeping for 6-1/2 hours How's that for cozy?

I have 2 kids, 2 dogs and a cat and it makes for great clean up and no pet dander problems. I say GET THE LEATHER!!!!!

Juliannaluv, I have to agree with you, our leather couch is very comfortable for sleeping. I fell asleep on it just last night. We don't get any weird sounds from the leather.

Teraberry, buy a good one if you do decide on leather and you won't have that sound problem.
