Thumbs up

Sorry Mods if this isn't the right places for this. I know a thread was started in here about it, and I wanted those interested to see this. I got this via Eamil this morning. Here are the new 2000 addys.

Operation Dear Abby has been assigned four addresses for use during the 2000 holiday season. Specific units and countries
are not being targeted -- only major U.S. military aerial mail terminals and fleet mail centers overseas. Once the
mail is received, these hubs will distribute it on a fair-share basis to all branches of the armed forces. This means a letter addressed to a "soldier" may be distributed
to an airman, sailor or Marine, allowing for wider distribution. This will also prevent the transportation system or specific units from being inundated.

To send mail to a specific area, address it to the closest
geographic hub:

FOR EUROPE AND SOUTHWEST ASIA:

Any Service Member
OPERATION DEAR ABBY
APO AE 09135

FOR THE MEDITERRANEAN BASIN:

Any Service Member
OPERATION DEAR ABBY
FPO AE 09646

FOR THE FAR EAST:

Any Service Member
OPERATION DEAR ABBY
APO AP 96285

FOR THE PACIFIC BASIN:

Any Service Member
OPERATION DEAR ABBY
FPO AP 96385

The U.S. Postal Service will begin accepting this mail on Nov. 15, 2000. After Jan. 15, 2001, mail will no longer be accepted for these addresses.

Readers, because Operation Dear Abby ZIP codes are temporary, they are not always entered into postal computers, and clerks may not be aware that they are valid.
If you encounter difficulty at your local post office, ask the clerk to check postal bulletins 22035 (Oct. 19, 2000)and/or 22036 (Nov. 2, 2000).

If this has already been posted today, sorry. I did a search and only the old post came up.

Becky

Wow. I am so excited that we can do this. My dh is in the military and I know how hard it is for him, and all of them to be away from family and friends. An idea of something to send is candy bars. Someone will always eat it and it will stay fresh for a while. And maybe gum or mints. Stuff that may not be readily available to them. Maybe a picture a child has colored. Or a grooming set. Just some thoughts. Happy Holiday season!

Big grin

You are all welcome. I would suggest if you want to send anything other than cards, you could always put together toiletry bags (they can get this stuff where ever they are, but you can always save them a buck or two if you send them. Make some for men, some for women.) or homebaked goodies (this was always a big hit on my DH's sub). I hope to do some extra cooking for them. Cookies usually ship well, breads and muffins don't because they may take a while to get there. Make sure any goodie you make is in an air tight package or as air tight as you can get it. The other people with service members may be able to lend some other suggestions. I am going off of what we did when the DH was in the Navy.

Thanks for the post - all those free samples we get sure could go to good use in a goodie bag. I've sent packages before and gotten some neat postcards from overseas. It's so hard to be away from home during the holidays. Let's not forget these women and men who put their life on the line everyday, so that we can keep our freedom

My kids do this every year & it's always fun when they get back some responses.

I'm also going to move this over to the General Chit Chat forum so more people will be able to read & respond!

Thanks for the post & reminder, bassmount!
