Angry I cannot believe what the school did!!!

I need to vent!!

My daughter came home yesterday from school and informed us that they had a field trip. No big deal you may be thinking but wait until you hear this..........they left the school premises and they NEVER sent home a permission slip or anything!! This means that MY child (among with others) left the school premises WITHOUT my consent......on a bus.....and I wasn't informed!!!

I am just fuming!!! I am calling the principal Monday to complain and get some answers. I don't know about the rest of you but the way I see it they should have informed us and got permission. What if there had been an emergency and I wasn't able to get my child or if there had a wreck. Any number of things could have happened and yet being stupid the school decides to take the kids WITHOUT parental consent.

Granted everything went ok but I still want to know where my child is just in case there is an emergency! Know? Hubby is pretty fired up about this too. He said I just need to be nice when I talk to the school and let them explain before I blow my top. That will be hard to do. This is my child you are talking about and she was taken off the school grounds without my consent. Know?

Do you think I am overreacting?!

I don't have children, but I do agree with you on this one. The parents should have been notified. If I had a child, I would have liked knowing that my child was not on school premises. They really should have sent a note home for consent. It's the right thing to do.

Overreacting? Not a bit! My daughter went on two trips with her class last year that I knew nothing about. One was just across the street to a nursing home, the other was to another school in the district for reasons I never did understand. I was still infuriated that they had left the school property without so much as even notifying me in advance of the trip. I read through the Student Handbook for my kids' school and it clearly states that it is policy that the children cannot leave the school property for any reason without written consent from the parent and if they don't have a signed permission slip for a field trip, they will not be allowed to go. Now why did they go against their own policy??

I would be calling the school and complaining too. Good luck .

i do not understand how that is possible......i believe you, but i cant believe they did it......in light of the fact that when a field trip is planned and the kids have to bring slips......they wont allow a child to go if they dont turn in the slip! even if they have oral permission from the parent.......makes no sense at all, my granddaughter couldnt go ice skating with her class because she didnt have a slip. they called me to ask if i could come over and sign a slip but they were leaving in 10 minutes....i live a half an hour away!!! i asked if i could meet them where they were going and they said that wouldnt do! they had to have it before they left the school.......i would really do some sqwauking....(spelling)

Ohhhh no they didn't!!!!!

I would be FUMING!!!!!!!

I've read that school handbook also and yes, it clearly states the school/teacher MUST have that permission slip or else your child will stay "behind".

Angry omg that's just wrong...

i would be so mad too!!!

but i do have one question....

this year, for both of my children, instead of sending permission slips home for EVERY field trip...they tried something new...in the handbook they have a bunch of things we had to sign and send back, like internet usage, i have read the handbook, etc etc etc...well one of those forms happened to be a "any field trip they go on this year they have my permission" slip...and what that is, is a permission slip for the entire year of field trips and they just send a reminder home a week before and the day before of the trip to remind you that they are goin on the trip and that you have already signed the slip....so i'm just wondering..is it possible you may have signed a slip like that? or that they thought you had?

if not, it is completely inconceivable to me that a school would do this and i would go STRAIGHT to the SUPERINTENDENT!!! how scary!!!

I thought about that too and checked our file (we keep copies of everything) and there was nothing in there like that so no, we didn't sign anything. But even if we had I feel they should inform the parents of these things ahead of time.

Like hubby said........if there had been an emergency we would have had no idea where she was at. That in itself is a parent's worst nightmare! Not to mention the fact that the adoption won't be final until Monday and we worry about someone taking her......even though we shouldn't because we know my ex could care less but it is still in our heads because we don't trust his family at all. We already had a round with the school about not allowing anyone but us or my parents pick her up or get information on her. They kept telling us that as long as my ex was still listed as her father there was nothing they could do about it. They told us once the adoption goes through then they would remove his name! Needless to say our attorney called them and TOLD them under NO circumstance is he or anyone in his family to get any information on her or pick her up and if ANYONE at the school did such then they would be held responsible and a lawsuit would be filed.

That's exactly the way our school system does it, too. But usually, the teachers will send notices of trips anyway; usually because they want chaperones.

My son's school did that at the end of the last school year too. Not only did they take them off school premises, they took them out of the state! Luckily nothing bad happened, but I still do not understand what they were thinking to put our children on a bus & drive away without any notice to the parents.

And I know how mad you must be because I was fuming! I was ready to go through the roof & the principal acted as if I had no reason to be upset. However, I must not have been the only parent who complained because this year there is a new district wide form that they are using asking for general permission and it does state that they will give us at least 48 hours notice before they take them anywhere.

I just don't understand the attitude of some administrators & teachers who think that they own your child during school hours and therefore have the right to do with them as they wish. The last I checked, my children are still my children - no matter where they are or the time of day. Thankfully both principals for my son's schools addressed this very issue during back to school night, assuring parents that they would be notified if the children were to leave the school for any reason.

Our school requires a permission slip for each individual field trip that they go on, and if it's not signed....they can't go.

I would definately be upset...and justifiyably so!!

Geez Louise!! No, I don't think you are overreacting at all. That is crazy!!

My question is that school just started....why are they going on a field trip so early? The kids would barely know their teachers at this point and vice versa.

Lisa..I'd go beyond the Superintendent..s/he will only try to figure out how to cover his rear. Superintendents, politically, support the schools. I think a letter to the State Department of Education is a more effective measure, with a letter to the Superintendent informing him he will be dealing with this issue in the near future. In my experience, the only real way to get a school's attention is to go right to the State Dep't who oversees the LAWS and parent's rights...yours were CLEARLY violated and I'd be furious too.
