Need help with an idea for a cake

need help making a cake...need an idea
Hi all! I am making a mermaid cake this week and I'm trying to figure out a substitution for the scales.

[Only registered and activated users can see links. Either login above or Register Now]

is where it's located with a picture of it.

I'm wanting the replace the necco wafers with something else...I can't come up with anything cool. any thoughts?

Thanks!

MERMAID CAKE

• 1 baked 8-inch round cake
• 1 baked 13- x 9- x 2-inch cake
• 12 baked cupcakes
• 8 cups frosting (white, blue and yellow)
• Necco wafers (pink, green and purple)
• 2 green Necco wafers and 2 blue M&M's for eyes
• Shoestring licorice eyelashes
• Fruit by the Foot mouth
• Colored sugar

Step 1:
Cut and arrange the cakes as shown in the small photos.

Step 2:
Frost the mermaid's tail blue and cover it with Necco wafers. Frost the head and body white and the bikini top blue.

Step 3:
Add the candy eyes and mouth. Frost the cupcake curls yellow, then sprinkle on colored sugar for marine sheen.

cata5 is welcome here
I don't have any good ideas.SORRY! Are you just trying to avoid the candy overload on the cake? (Looks good...tastes...yuk... )

Thanks for bringing this cake to my attention. My sis is having a Little Mermaid party for her DD's 5th birthday. This cake would be great! I am so excited to pass this on to her. Now to figure out what to do for my DS's birthday cake...magic is the theme...

How about just frosting? You could use a big tip on your decorating bag and zigzag the frosting in the colors suggested.

I think it looks really nice with the Necco wafers, especially in all those pastel colors!

Can't think of much else, maybe M & M's? My kids love Necco wafers (they are 2 & 4)...

Thanks for sharing the link, I think I may try this for my girls!

Here's my 2 cents

I've used fruit roll ups before to make things like the hat band and bow on Madeline's hat (the cake was just her hat). It turned out great. You could use fruit roll ups and a cookie cutter to cut the shape out. The colors would be great but....it is more candy.

Andrea - how did you make the Madeline cake, did you use the Pillsbury recipe on birthdayexpress.com?

My girls adore Madeline! Kath

What a cute cake! Why couldn't you use the miniture Nilla Wafers from Nabisco. They have plain and colored. They are a little bigger but not much....goodluck! Joy

Shocked

At either Michael's or Hobby Lobby, I found Wilton Candy Melts in assorted pastels all in one bag.

They are thicker than Neccos, but taste a whole lot better (sort of like white chocolate). If they are much too thick, you could melt each color separately, pour onto plastic wrap and cut into scales with a film canister or such. Then just keep the scraps for the next inspiration or get a cute seashell candy mold and make solid color or marbled shells for your mermaid!!
