Question

My sister told me about the laundry soap recipe (she loves it) So I was wondering if anyone had a recipe for dishwasher detergent. This is also very expensive but a necessity in a busy household.Thanks.

Shocked

I KNOW you want a dishwasher detergent recipe and SO DO I! However, here's a great recipe for window cleaner!

1 pint alcohol (rubbing)
1 tsp. dish soap
2 Tbls. non-sudsy ammonia

*Put into a 1 gallon jug and fill with water.

*This recipe saves you a bundle of moolah!

If you ever get the dishwasher detergent recipe, please let me know!

Love

I found this recipe but haven't tried it yet.

Automatic Dishwasher Soap

In each cup in the dishwasher that holds detergent, place two tablespoons Borax and two tablespoons of baking soda.

I think I will try this tonight!

Here is what I have been using:

equal parts borax and washing soda in each cup of the dishwasher (I use an 1/8 cup measure)

I may try the baking soda next though, that is probably cheaper. P.S. A GREAT site with lots of frugal make-your-own cleaners, etc. is:

You are very welcome for the site; y'all have helped me so much here I am glad to finally know something someone else can use
BTW, Pompower2000, the recipe you posted for the window cleaner even works on counters, etc. kind of like 409 or Fantastic. I found it on here a couple of weeks ago and love it. It was the first one I tried, then I was brave enough to try the laundry detergent.

Thanks everyone for your great ideas. Thank you so much prism68 that web site has great craft ideas for kids too.I have a suggestion for the laundry soap, I mixed mine up in an old 5-gallon cooler with a spigot on it. Then I can easily fill my old laundry bottles from it and store my ingredients inside till next time.I was looking at the laundry soap recipe and noticed that it has the same stuff in it as the automatic dishwasher detergent recipes except for the grated up bar of soap. Then I relized that Ivory also makes dishwashing liquid. It's the same stuff but it's a liquid. So why can't Ivory soap(as a bar) be used to make dishwasher liquid detergent? If anyone can think of a reson let me know. And also do you think vinegar could be used instead of Jet Dry as a rinse aid? Thanks

Prism68, I've had that recipe since 1977! I'm glad you like it. It works great on car interiors, bathroom tile, washing walls, etc.
Juliesanne, I have no idea about vinegar instead of jet dry, I don't have to use it anymore, my dishwasher works great without it! I've owned my dishwasher since 1985 and it's the best one I've ever had. Not one service call yet!(knock on wood) I figured out that I was just waisting money. That's a terrific idea about the coooler for mixing laundry detergent!

Re: Need a recipe for dishwasher detergent

I made up a recipe today and it worked great. I used 1/4 cup baking soda, 1 tsp solu-mel (from melaleuca), 1 tsp bleach mixed them all together and placed in dishwasher. So far clean sparkling dishes and no spots as I also don't use Jet-dry. I like the idea of vinegar to replace that...I will try it and let you know.
I am going to try other automatic dishwasher recipes up and I will post which ones work best. I would like to use organic and bleach doesn't help...

Thanks for all the other ideas! I am new to this site today as I searched the internet for other recipes for dishwasher detergent!

Thumbs up Re: Need a recipe for dishwasher detergent

Hi guys...I use the vinegar instead of jet dry and it works even better. Where I live the hard water is so bad even jet dry did'nt help but sister-in-law told me to use vinegar and it was just what I needed.

1 big gallon costs about $2.00 at wal-mart and I dump about 1/2 cup in the bottom with each load. No spots on my dishes and hot hard water deposits. Much cheaper to!

Thanks [Only registered and activated users can see links. Either login above or Register Now]
