How to trim your hair all by yourself!

I haven't had a trim in 6 months and my ends were dried out and needed cut off. I dislike the trims I get in a salon for various reasons. My hair is baby fine, wavy/curly, and I have a LOT of hair.

Last night I turned my head upside down and grabbed sections and dusted the ends lightly with a very sharp small cuticle scissors.

Then I followed the directions at this site for the slight U-shape. I performed all the steps 3 times and got the best trim of my life. That's the truth!

This works for long hair:

Re: How to trim your hair all by yourself!

I have been triming my own hair for atleast 10 years now and always get the best results.
I despise going to salons having some creepy woman wash my hair, scraping at my scalp with her acrilic finger nails and talking over me. Then trying to style my hair every way I pleaded her not too. And after its all over having to pay $50-$80 to go home irritated and wondering how long its going to take me to grow out the mess she made.

Thanks for that site link, im going to go check it out. maybe i can learn some new tricks!

Thank goodness, after our triplets were born, I found a flowbee at a thrift shop for $5. We have been using it for 5 years now, and it has been a Godsend.

DH has used a Flowbee for years and years on his hair. He loves it - can get a haircut when it's convenient for him, and at home to boot. At one point he needed new blades and I remember we easily ordered them from the Flowbee website.

I won't let my husband use the flowbee on me, but I do color my hair at home (got tired of driving two hours roundtrip and paying $80 for the opportunity to do so in a salon.)

Re: How to trim your hair all by yourself!

Nice tip, TL! Mark usually trims my hair and he does at least as good a job as any salon as all I want, like you, is the ends cut off. The salons usually want to do other things, but not actually what you want! lol

Any tips on how to get 4 year olds to sit still while cutting their hair?

Re: How to trim your hair all by yourself!

If you have a timer at home (even on the stove) ....try telling your child you are going to play a "new game".

You go first......set timer for 4 or 5 minutes & YOU sit "still" & tell your child to use his "finger scissors" to pretend cutting your hair.

Then .....set timer again & have him "TRY" to be still for 4-5 minutes while you use your "finger scissors" pretending to cut his hair.

Just make sure you tell him that if he goes to get a HAIRCUT WITH REAL SCISSORS he must be still!

(If it don't work.....at least the kids "usually" eat up the attn. of the game & all you've lost is 10 minutes of your life or gained 10 minutes of bonding).
---------------------------------------------------------------
*** Offer a small reward if he "WINS" by being still for the short period of time.

A trip to the park, 2 instead of 1 bedtime story, a trip to the pet store or farm to "just visit" the animals, a trip to the library.......something free & preferably NOT food treats (diabetes is rising in kids)! (Another plus - more bonding time for both of you).

Re: How to trim your hair all by yourself!

Okay - got a question for you all.

My hair grows quickly, so I used to hilite it to make the grey less not show up as quick.

I went back to just coloring to save money - but 'cuz my hair color is dark & no more hilites to "blend in" with new grey rooted hair - the grey (actually almost white) hair makes me look like a skunk with that "light stripe" thing going on.......

Is there any product besides coloring my entire head with color too often that would help with this problem?

Re: How to trim your hair all by yourself!

Wow, TL, thanks for this info; I love it! I cut my bangs, top and sides myself, but now I'll be able to do the rest of it.

Oh, and Bonnieb, when I wanted my son to look down while I cut the back of his hair, I would have him stand up, then put a treat on a plate of the floor (or a picture of something interesting) for him to look at. It worked!

Also, Bonnieb, I've learned a LOT about coloring my hair at home (through a number of minor disasters). We should have a thread about that!

Hi misothere,
You can touch up your roots with Clairol Nice & Easy Root Touch up kit; you get a neat little comb with it and enough to do your part; less messy than the full-head kit, but you won't have enough to cover any extras, or any other areas if you ever change your part. I tried this one time, but then just bought the full coloring box next time. If I recall, the price is about the same on either.

Hi Whitequeen,
The first time I ever colored my hair at home, I used Clairol nice & Easy, and rather than getting blonde, it turned out red. (My hair had previously been highlighted blonde, but I am naturally medium brown.) I called their helpline to see what color I needed to purchase to get the job done, and was informed that they had no color strong enough to give me the results I wanted, for a light blonde. So I used L'Oreal Les Blondissimes for a while,----that worked awesome! But after several months, the super-light blonde shade was just too much work to keep up, so I "downgraded" to a L'oreal natural blonde shade, and it looks fine. I think the hardest part is finding a shade to stick with that works for you.

Re: How to trim your hair all by yourself!

Thanx for all your info on the "covering the skunk stripe part" (LOL)! Any tips on not getting the boxed color ALL OVER while doing color yourself?

Plus what about the back that you can't see, how do ya' know if the color is "all over correct"?
