Re: How to trim your hair all by yourself!

Bonnieb, I've had numerous problems, including that one! My hair is light brown, but when I lighten it, it always comes out too red. So I went for a dark ash blonde, but it was too dark. No matter what lighter colors I used, it wouldn't change. I called the manufacturer and found out that dye is not strong enough to lighten pre-dyed hair.

So then I used a highlighting kit, meant for colored hair. I didn't leave it on long enough, and the streaks came out screaming orange! I found out that's what happens if you bleach hair, but don't leave the bleach on long enough to break through your color. (Leave it on longer if you have darker hair.)

I called L'Oreal for advice, and they were very helpful. Now I use L'Oreal's natural ash blonde, and it's fine. What did I learn from all this? Call FIRST if you have any questions!

And don't ask me about the time my hair turned green . . .

Then I followed the directions at this site for the slight U-shape. I performed all the steps 3 times and got the best trim of my life. That's the truth!

This works for long hair:

I went back to just coloring to save money - but 'cuz my hair color is dark & no more hilites to "blend in" with new grey rooted hair - the grey (actually almost white) hair makes me look like a skunk with that "light stripe" thing going on.......

Is there any product besides coloring my entire head with color too often that would help with this problem?
I had to go lighter to avoid the skunk effect. Also, avoid any hints of red and go with neutrals to cover gray better and longer. Another trick is to mix two related colors, one or two shades apart. The lighter will grab the whites and grays better, the darker will latch on to the darker hair. You'll get bulilt-in highlights. Follow the timing for the darker color if there is a difference. After the first time only bring solution through the whole head for the last few minutes while the roots are finishing up. A hairstylist friend told me this 8 or 9 years ago and I've been doing it ever since. We gray early in my family! I was a broke twenty-something with 2 babies at home and I had to figure something out. Also, I practically get haircolor free by using coupons/sales/rebates. Stock up enough on your favorite to survive until the next sale/offer for that brand. Look for brands that promise gray coverage.
