Lightbulb

I got this recipe several years ago from a website I can't remember now, but my mom and her friends swear by these "bath salts" in the winter to cure their dry skin.

1 cup Epson Salts
1 tsp Glycerin
Food Coloring (opt)
Perfume or essential oils (optional)

So cheap to make and in a decorated canning jar, they make great gifts. Use 1/4 to 1/3 cup per bath for soft skin. I make big batches and use the glass or acrylic canisters to keep them in and a small pet food scoop to fetch them out. They are a little stickier than true bath salts.

I make a quicker and easier version:
1 cup rock salt
1 tablespoon glycerin
A few drops food coloring and scent
Mix in a jar

These sound fabulous but where can I find the scents or scented oils? I live in a remote area and I haven't had any luck finding them around here. thanks!

You can buy perfume oils at The Body Shop in shopping malls. They also have a website at:

Their US site for on-line shopping isn't up yet, but maybe you can click on the Canadian site and order from there....

You can call for a catalog at 1-800-263-9746.

Hope this helps!

I used vanilla extract for my first couple of jars and then went to a natural food store after that.

dkeppel- Where do you get the rock salt and is it expensive? The area I live in is small enough that I haven't seen rock salt in the stores. I admit I like the epsom salts because they are cheap.

Rock Salt is used in making ice cream and is found in grocery and drug stores, normally on the spice row. It's usually like 60 cents for two pounds.

I gotta try this thanks for the great easy frugal recipe. I live way way up north where the winters are very cold and hard on the skin. I am sick of paying for expensive lotion for all 5 of us. Will give this a try.

Yep. I've left this mixture out for several days, but it never dries. That's why I recommend a scoop if giving as a gift. I think the glycerin keeps it moist.

I noticed a difference of my skin not itching after bathing in this. How much do you usually put in each bath?

My best friend uses about 1/2 a cup. I use more and less depending on my skin. Sometimes I need more.
