Tips on Grocery Shopping Saving

Hi everyone!

I found this great article at [Only registered and activated users can see links. Either login above or Register Now] about grocery shopping. It gives some tips on how to save money when you go to the grocery store. Some of my favorites:

-Plan your spending to avoid impulse buys like candy bars at the checkout or unnecessary snacks.
-Grow your own fruits, nuts, and veggies or make it yourself to save!
-Check the day old bread bin, and the reduced merchandise cart.
-Ask for a rain check if an advertised special is out of stock. Look for more coupons for that product until it comes back in, you might save double!
-Breads and rolls freeze very well so stock up at bread outlets.
-Study the sales cycles of the stores you shop at, so you will know when to expect certain items to go on sale.
-No store has the lowest price on all items; it will vary so be sure to investigate.

That's just a snippet of the full article. I don't want to get in trouble for posting the whole thing, so check out the site if you want to see all of it! Happy shopping! Anyone have any others not in the article to add? I'm ALWAYS looking for new ways to save!

Re: Tips on Grocery Shopping Saving

I will read the article later (just about ready to go out grocery shopping!)

My personal tips:

Start a local coupon trading club amongst friends, neighbors, classmates, coworkers! The coupons that they throw out might be something you need! (and vice versa).

Match coupons against sale items from store flyers. Some stores will price-match against competitors (I believe WalMart in particular does that) which can save on gas. Also find out which stores will take competitors' coupons - and sign up for any and all homemailers for additional savings!

Carpool to the store whenever possible to save on gas money (here in CT it's just under $2.50 a gallon!). When visiting a store out of town make sure it's worth the trip - again, carpool!

Always be prepared, take your coupons with you to the store. Many stores have unadvertised specials, especially ongoing ones for a few weeks at a time.

Use a coupon binder or box to sort and store your coupons.

I know of a website with a coupon decoder, but as it is a competitive deal site, it's probably not wise to post it here. You can pm me or email me for the website if you'd like!

My Mommy prefers Ralphs and Vons because they have that double coupon thingie. I like all the candy, ice cream, and other junk food that she buys.

Did you know it pays to buy store brands even generic no name grocery items? Buy them when you can and you will $ave $ome Ca$H, As they are the same quality as the more expensive name brands items. And many, many times these grocery items are made by the same name brand manufacturers you know and buy from already. You save because the items are labeled differently and priced lower because of it. How can this be? The name brands manufacturers get tax credits, incentives, or the overall joy from their civic contributions for supplying this market and need.

Re: Tips on Grocery Shopping Saving

Stockpile, Stockpile, Stockpile!

My tips:

NEVER buy generic!
ALWAYS use coupons, rebates, sales to maximize your savings
ALWAYS, ALWAYS get rainchecks! Rainchecks extend the original date of the sale, so that you can find the coupons later.

best tip of all -- in the middle of the week, in the evening, take a notebook and inkpen with you to the store ... do NOT take money (you will be tempted to spend it)....go through EVERY aisle and write down what they are out of stock on (sale items), then head for the registers and get rainchecks for those items!!

ALWAYS carry your coupon binders with you.

if you want to see pictures of my coupon binders, just ask, I will post them.

Re: Tips on Grocery Shopping Saving

Planning before you head off to the supermarket will help you shop more economically. Take the time to do a quick inventory of your kitchen to determine the food that you need. Prepare your shopping list and make notations of applicable coupons that you may want to use. Read the newspapers and circulars to find the best deals.
Choosing the Right Store
For basic grocery needs many grocery stores now offer excellent product and price selection, frequent shoppers programs and double coupon days. However, when buying in bulk you may want to tackle the warehouse clubs or superstores. Non-perishable items are often at unbeatable prices at such stores. For the best prices on health and beauty products check the national drugstore chains and superstores.
Eat First
Grocery stores know the power of the sweet smell of freshly baked bread. Just one sniff will ignite the appetite and send even the most hardened shopper down the aisle grabbing for anything that looks good. Remember, everything looks good when our stomachs are screaming, "feed me!"
Coupons, Rebates, and Frequent Shopper Programs
You can save hundreds of dollars a year by taking advantage of product incentives. Even the less enthusiastic coupon clipper can shave an average of 10 percent off their bottom-line by cashing in a small handful of coupons per trip. If your store offers a frequent shopper program, why not sign-up? You will receive advanced notice of special loss leaders, double-coupon days and other money saving information.
