I wouldn't take that websites thread to heart, as some of the members don't seem to think it "is" fake. I read the entire thread and the person who posted got a "red" for posting it - whatever that is - and was complaining about it. It could very well be a real freebie; with that said, I'm signing up for it ! Thanks! Kat

Hi, I read the entire thread that you posted from that site. I think the keyword here is "possible" phony site. Even the members could not agree on it. It seemed to be the opinion of one member, not all. And that members thought was that this site was gathering mailing addresses. Or something like that. I did sign up for it, and this is what is on the website: McLoren Respects your privacy - Your information will not be sold to anybody. Kat

Guys-- I know, I know... First--Georgi--I didn't mean to make you feel bad... And yes...I realize what I posted were opinions... but I think we've all taken a chance on some posts that just seem so phony. What I do is run a search...I tend to be suspicious if ALL that the search turns up is the posted offer, and nothing else. And...with this Mcloren post...ALL I got was the sample offer site and the site about the possibility of it being a phony. That was a red flag to me, and I just wanted to pass it along. Nothing is wrong with that, IMO, wrong isn't a word I'd use, I do think it's unnecessary. If we get a freebie, it's a good one - if we continue to fill out forms from the same site and get nothing, well... don't anymore. Eventually one of us will close the thread and that will be the end of it. I posted a product recall, that I "just" found today on the manufacturs main website, and posted it in the chit-chat forum, on a product that I still see in stores and being advertised - but I didn't post it here. And the recall was (you're going to love this one) from February! I think the reason that your search didn't turn up anything, except what it did for this particular site, is that this website was only registered about 3 days ago. It's a new site, and many times when a new site launches a new product, it hasn't even hit the search engines yet - when I had my website, I was on a lot of the search engines, but not for over a week. And some took even longer. LOL, I've signed up for many, many things that I've never gotten - this one is a new site and I 'think' we probably have a better chance with this one than some of the others that I never got. The way I look at it, whatever I get in the mail, is one more Freebie I never had. I actually don't know how you'd go about determining how a sites offers are fake; at least not till it had been there awhile, done several free offers and not delivered on them. Then they still may not be "fake" offers; they just may have had a very, very limited amount of freebies to give out. I cannot figure out what a REALLY fake offer would be unless you filled in your name and addy and won thousands of dollars or a car; but it would have to be something huge to even look fake. And one of the Moderators would take care of that. Kat

We need to drop this and what we also need to do is to decide for ourselves what to sign up for and what not to - it's as simple as that. Kat

Google ads don't make a site phony - Google now has over half of the on-line advertising market. In fact, dealofday.com itself uses them! ;-) The site does look suspicious though, and I went to the root domain and the index file didn't exist which makes me a bit wary....

| Re: mr orange 12 oz bottle
Well the thing about invalid offers does happen sometimes, I sign up for tons of stuff and I do get over 80%+ of the stuff I sign up for, but yes, there are some that do just make an offer and never send the item because they are harvesting email addys and mailing addresses. However, when such happens, there is no one to blame and no way to know for sure, until some of us sign up and see if it shows up. That is the main reason that I always reiterate the most important piece of advice that I can give anyone who wants to coupon/freebie hunt, KEEP YOURSELF A FREE JUNK EMAIL TO USE FOR SIGNUPS! That way you can prevent all the junk, newsletters, and possible spam from cluttering up your personal box. For instance, I post my gmail address on here so people can contact me and I use it for freebie signups, I have another hotmail addy that I use when I sign my dad up for samples and such, so my main box, that I oay good money every month to use, is kept cleaned out and I know anything that comes there is a personal email that I will want to answer. My gmail box, I do check several times everyday, but I already know a lot of what will be in there is junk that I can just delete and not worry about, so it is easier to seperate it from member's emails that I need to answer. Now as to posting what you learned about an offer, if it seems to be fake or whatever, there is no problem with that, just say you found this info on another site, and instead of listing the site, which might be a competing place or might not appreciate the using of their links if we are competing with them, just post the text out and use quotation marks so we know you found it elsewhere. Similar to what I tell people to do when they "borrow" a freebie link from another site and post it on here, so you are within our rules of not posting competing sites and you avoid offending anyone from other sites as well. Believe it or not, we have had other site owners and admin complain for far less. LOL! I could be wrong here, but I think Kats is just trying to say that the point has been made now, and member's will decide for themselves if they want to sign up for it and see if it arrives or not. Some, like myself, don't care, I will try to sign up for anything once, if someone really wants to spam me or send me junk snail mail, it is very easy to find my address and stuff anyway, not like I am in the witness protection program and hidden or anything, everything is listed publicly and can be easily found for most people in a simple search. So as long as the site isn't wanting your banking and financial info, and the only thing you might get out of it is more junk mail that you have to toss out or recycle, what is the real harm in it? Post your opinion or what you found and move on. Like Kats said, it is a possible phony site, not proven yet, more info can't be found yet during searches. Just keep it polite so you don't upset the OP who was just trying to share a goody they found, and I think we will all be fine. Toby and I often post when we see a freebie come up that we know never arrives, we let everyone know that, so they don't bother to waste their time, and then we close the thread. She and I have both been here for a long time, and while most are valid, there are those few, like I said, about 20% that don't arrive because they weren't real offers. And as Georgie, the op said, it is sometimes very hard to tell, I have had some very legitimate looking places that did not send what they offered, and others that I thought never would who did and I was very, pleasantly surprised. So instead of posting, I did a search, this is what I found, it's a fake site, which obviously upset the OP, who by the way is a very nice young woman trying hard to be an active and contributing member of our community, you can make the post a little nicer if you say something like "Well I am not sure about this one, some people think it isn't legit, but everyone has to make up their own mind on it. Maybe people who signed up can let us know if it does arrive." Now, do you see the difference between the two attitudes? Bronx I know you did not intend to upset anyone or to be rude, I know you way better than that now, but just your wording can come across on the internet in different ways, and since your tone of voice and body language isn't here to give someone a clue, it is very hard to tell if you are accusing or just issuing a warning just in case. So less of these misunderstandings would happen if we all just took an extra moment to think and say to yourself, "What would I think if someone posted it phrased this way?" I know that I can't be the only here who has ever posted a message or sent an email, which I intended to be flippant or funny, only to have the other person take it totally wrong, because they couldn't hear my laughter or see the smile on my face when I said it. The internet is so big and user friendly now, that sometimes we all forget there are still some idiosyncracies of human interaction that you can't convey with just type written statements, thus the evolution of things online like LOL, J/K, and etc. So Gecin, there is no need to be so defensive, kats edited Bronx's post because it could be taken wrong and upset the OP, and everything just went haywire from there. But no one was really trying to insult anyone, or say you can't voice your opinion or share information that you found. You just have to be careful how you do it, a great difference can also be made many times by just saying "Thanks for taking the time to post...but..." K? K! Now, I did a google search and found the site with the opinions expressed that Bronx was talking about, and while I can see their point, I can also see the other side of the issue. I have seen many company sites that list other places ads on their pages, google ads, affialiate sites, sister products and etc. So that does not red flag it for me, neither does the newness of it, many places who want to launch a product will have a newly created site or page with a freebie offer on it, to get samples or coupons out there, they of course hope people will like the product enough to spend their money on it at regular price when it hits your supermarket shelves. I have seen some companies that launched their free sample page FIRST, before the rest of the site was even done yet, so their domain isn't done, there are no other pages, but they sent what they promised. Now, another thing they say is who can launch this all in 24 hours? Well, there is no saying that they did, they might have been working and planning this for months, but they just recently got the first page of their site or offer up and running. At some point, every site on the net, whether they offer free samples or not, is only 24 hours old, it is just called launching your site! And not everyone pre-registers their domain months in advance. Even the invalid phone number could be that it just isn't up and running yet. So yes, this could be an invalid offer, or it could be a valid one, no one can say for sure just yet. |

o--KAY Here I am again, in the middle of a conflict, that I also unfortunately started. I have contacted Kat and addressed her comments. I am pretty sure we've come to a common ground. Also, let me say again to Georgi, that I in no way meant my original post to criticize her, her postings, or her intentions. Ver...absolutely, this medium lends itself to misunderstandings As you said a writer's "voice" is open to interpretation, because you're dealing with just words on a screen. But, in my own defense, I think about and word my posts carefully and respectfully. So, on the occasion that something I post is misinterpreted and brought to my attention, I am a big girl...I address the problem with an explanation and a ready apology when warranted. Thanks for listening Judy (aka Bronx) Last edited by katlnhats; 07-23-2006 at 04:19 PM. |

No problems here. I think if we talk (in general), we resolve things pretty well, and I always bristle a little when someone says to "drop it." When something's settled to everyone's satisfaction, it gets dropped naturally and doesn't crop up again. You can't sort of it rush it by forcing it. It's not the same. And like I said before, georgi is not being criticized in the least and her efforts are very appreciated. It was just about sharing all information related to a freebie, that's all. Glad it was discussed. Thanks everyone! Alexandra Alexandra, Please check your pms. Thanks, Kat Last edited by katlnhats; 07-23-2006 at 04:13 PM. Reason: check your pms. Please. |
