Rainbow Vacuum Cleaner

Need your opinions, please. We had a demo on a Rainbow last year. DH wanted to buy, but I thought they were way too much money. Well, recently attended the fair, and the guy had a booth set up. Of course, I registered for whatever and he calls tonight. Says the price will go up $100.00 next week and just wanted to let us know. He told us he would give us $400.00 trade-in, plus $50.00 gc to his store, plus a $100.00 knife set. Yeah, I know the knife set probably is worth about $5.00. Anyway, do any of you use a Rainbow and what is your opinion of them? They seem to work really well, and my Kirby doesn't pick up anymore. Do you think they are alot of trouble and do you think they pick up and work really good? Please give me some feedback. He says that we can buy it for $1500.00!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Shocked

I HATED mine!!! Changing that water was horrible especially if you have a pet. One time I forgot to empty the water and the smell was horrible. I lived in a two story home at the time it is not a light unit(at least the one I had). The hose wasn't long enough to do the steps and you couldn't balance the unit on the stairs either..
I think you can buy an attachment for the steps but that was an additional amount above the already high price tag.

I thought Kirby offered lifetime or something similar warranties. I am sure you paid alot for your kirby, i would call them and ask them.

I had a Rainbow about 15 years ago and I liked it, but it was a pain to change the water. I must admit that I traded the Rainbow in on a Kirby after I got married and it was the best trade I ever made. I like the Kirby so much I demanded custody of it when my husband and I divorced. That's what worries me. I have heard so many people talk about the water thing. But the demos really make it look good. I don't want to spend all that money--gosh, don't know what to do. My Kirby is really old and doesn't pick up. It's one of the "blue ones", probably 15 or so years old.

brenda, i was under the impression that kirby had a lifetime warranty....considering what you pay for them, i wouldnt think i would have gotten my money out of it in 15 years.

I don't know anything about the Rainbow brand, but I am always very leary when a salesperson tells me the price is going up the next day or the next week. Puts the pressure on to make a rash decision. For what it's worth, the fact that he told you that just makes the whole deal seem a little shady to me. Just my opinion...

For about half that amount you could get a collection of cleaning tools, such as a steam cleaner, a hepa-filter regular vac, a wet/dry vac for the basement, and a stairs/car vac. I'd rather have a collection of vacs so I could have the "right tool for the job", and money left over for something more fun/interesting.

Maybe 10 years ago rainbows did better at cleaning, but I really wonder now, given the improvements in technology in $200 vacuums. Do you want to haul that water all over the house every time you want to vacuum?

Also, check out the warranty. One site on the web says you get the warranty from the salesperson, not the mfg..so if they disappear, and you have a problem..too bad, so sad.

Just the stress alone of shelling out $1500 for a stupid vacuum cleaner would make me turn it down...what if I were wrong, and it wasn't any better, or died after a year? I'd feel so dumb.

Just my (obviously biased) opinion.

This is off a little bit but thought I would jump in with my .02. I got the top of the line Hoover Windtunnel (not the bagless) that is self propelled when we built our new house and I wouldn't trade it for anything. I absoluteley love it. Highly recommend it to anyone. I think I paid about 370.00 for it through JCPenney plus shipping.

I have to agree with the majority. A good HEPA vac and a home steam cleaner (love my Hoover) are just as good anymore.

I know...you figure you pay for what you get, but I can't imagine ANY vac being worth $1500. JMO :)

And I agree with Bunny...seems a little shady.......

(ARNOLD SHWARZENEGGER VOICE) DONT DO IT!!! THERE IS A BETTER WAY!!!

I tried to Sell Kirby's (I cant sell a hershey's bar to a 5 year old)... But I am still real impressed with the G6 model... If you like Rainbow, I'm not gonna try to talk you out of it, but check it out on Ebay first... Here's a Kirby page...

http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?MfcISAPICommand=GetResult&pb=&ht=1&st=2&query=kirby+g6&SortProperty=MetaEndSort

Bunny is 100% correct, As far as the $100 increase, that's called Bullsh** or High Pressure sales... Including a free product (At least to me) makes me wonder why do they NEED a gimmick? What's wrong with the Vacuumn?.... (High priced Humidifier)

That's my Buck fifty....

Okay, glad to see your comments. No, this guy came out last year--we agreed to see a demo as a favor to dh's boss, so they could get a free shampooer--and showed us how wonderful these vac's are. I was pretty impressed and what he said made since. Something about the water traps the dust and a vac with a bag expells alot of the dust into the air. He took his little light and turned on my Kirby and it just made you sick. Then he vac's my furniture and yuck. Anyway, dh is all ready to buy one, but tightwad me holds back. Then the guy calls with all this, so wasn't sure what to do. However, I did call him back this afternoon and told him didn't want to do it right now. That's alot of money for a vac!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And he said he was trying to break some kind of record and was gonna do 10 demos tomorrow starting at 6 in the morning and ending at midnight--told him I had plans and didn't want to commit. Anyway, thanks for the info.

Thumbs down Keep your Money

I had a rainbow once , It did work well, but it was heavy and a pain to empty. you will never use it for all things it does.
If you have your heart set on it keep searching , I'm sure you can find one at half the price the salesman wants.
