Unhappy How can I get gas smell off of clothes???

Last nite my DH was removing the gas tank from one of his trucks and got gas all over his clothes so I took them and threw them in the washer with some Tide and Simple green and some liquid fabric softener thinking that would take it out....
Well it didnt now my washer smells like gas as does his clothes and I cant get the smell out of none of them...

I tried even scrubbing the inside of the washer with Tide and the smell is still there.
If anyone has any ideas please HELPPPP!!!
I will throw the clothes away if I have to but this is a new washer I cant throw it away :(

Thanks in Advance...

the best ive been able to come up with is hang the clothes out in the fresh air for a few days. the washer can be run through a heavy bleach cycle. hope this helps!

White vinegar is a great odor remover too. And the vinegar smell doesn't stay in your clothing.

Lightbulb

When the mower gas can leaked in the back of my little station wagon, I thought the smell would never come out of the carpet, until I tried the auto parts guy's advice:

- put a glass pie plate (not aluminum) of plain ammonia on the trunk floor overnight.

- open trunk outside (not in garage) for a few hours in the morning.

- put a whole, unbruised apple in the trunk and under each seat in the car to get the rest of the smell. Check the apples every few days and replace if they get "hurt"

The gas smell really did go away!!

You could probably use the same idea in your washing machine, putting the ammonia in a glass measuring cup (I'll bet the pie plate won't fit) inside overnight.

Be sure that you have plenty of ventilation when you open it to air it out the next day and take the apples out before you do any wash :D This may tie up your washer for a few days, but .....

From what this site says, Coca Cola added to your laundry removes the gasoline smell.
