"World of WarCraft" online game info please

I received this game for "Father's Day". DS did not realize it was an online game. I have never tried an "online game" before. I know you have to pay to play, but that's it. I love "RPG's". But have never ventured into the realm of online RPG's. Does anyone here have any information that may help.

DS says that his friend plays it on a computer, but not online. Is that possible? The way I understand the instructions is that you can't play by yourself. You must join a website and pay a fee to play.

Am I wrong? Please help. DS and I talked last night about the game. I've researched it online and still come up with you have to "Pay to Play". Yes, I've been to Blizzard.com.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. TIA!:D

Thank you M'Lady. I now understand that DS was mistaken about his friend playing it on a computer without internet. Maybe DS is trying to pull one over on the "old man". Get me interested enough to pay, then he can play it too. Now I will admit, I am curious. Like I said, I've never played a game like this. I love RPGs. It's about all I play. The only other type of game I like is Flight Simulators. So....I don't know. Part of me wants to try it.........another part (my gut feeling) says "Don't even go there. You'll get addicted.:D

:( :( :( Ok, I tried it. Bought a $2 sample disk, took 3 days to load everything and get to the game. I AM NOT impressed! I don't see how anyone could be so involved with this game to pay $15 a month! I love RPG's, I think I've said that before, but WoW, I have better graphics and stuff on my XBOX 360!! And once I buy the game, I don't have to pay to play!

What I don't understand is the big hype about "online" games. They're supposed to be soooooo much better.........yeah right! I think I'll stick to my "console" games.
