try e-bay. I have successfully gotten several violins for $30-50. They aren't great, but good for starters!

Thought I'd add a little more.... I am a violin performance major with about 45 students right now. The violins I purchased were new and like I said earlier....OK. If you change the strings to "Dominents" or "Pro Arte" from the steel strings initially on the violins they do sound much better. I got one violin from Folk of the Wood for &69 and gave it to a relative. The other violins I use as rentals for beginners. If you would like advice on particular violins up for sale post again (soon) before the link here is buried! and I'll take a look at whatever you have a question about. Be sure to look at the seller's "refrences" There is one guy who sells there who is a stinker!
Good luck!

check #1420867008 Ok quality. sound average, new strings necessary. Good starter. Wood bow with horsehair a plus. This is probably the cheapest on the board right now. I did a search. There are some decent ones for $75. Let me know if I can help more>
