I have been reading posts on weight loss and

I was curious...I've seen alot of you have had great success with weight loss. Congrats to you all! It's certainly not an easy thing to do.
My question is, did or do any of you have a weight issue because you don't eat enough?
I am told that if you are overweight and don't eat enough food through out the day you will be unable to lose weight because your body goes into starvation mode.
Apparently this is my problem...I don't eat enough and am overweight. At one point yes, I ate enough to pack on the pounds but over the past 6 years my eating has reduced drastically. I only eat if I am really hungry which is usually once a day, sometimes twice but NEVER breakfast. I can't stand the thought of food in my mouth before noon time.
If anyone else here has or has had this problem I would love to hear how you overcame it or are dealing with it now.

Re: I have been reading posts on weight loss and

I always had a theory that you should never cut out of your diet anything you ever plan on eating again. Then I saw a situation on a TV show called Starting Over a couple years back. There was a gal on it who rarely ate, but was very overweight. It is very easy to mess up your metabolism. They had to get her to eat more to get her to lose weight. I would suggest you see a dietician, about a diet that would boost your metabolism that you have essentially shut down. ((((((((((Big hugs)))))))))) I can't imagine how frustrating this has been for you over the years.

Re: I have been reading posts on weight loss and

It's always been said that it's much easier to lose and maintain your weight if you eat breakfast. Personally I'm not a breakfast eater, but I remember when I went off to work every day and always ate that I never had a problem. Now it's hit and miss, but I'm trying to get back in the habit again.

Re: I have been reading posts on weight loss and

Well, from all the inspiring stories on DOD I have decided to try it again lol.
I decided to start with one small change at a time. I already get some exercise by swimming nearly everyday. So I decided to force myself to eat when I wake in the morning. I figure it shouldn't be to difficult to force down a piece of fruit.
That will be my start and I will do that without adding anything new until I eat my fruit without even having to think about it. Then perhaps I can work on eating lunch lol.
Thanks for all the input. I truly appreciate it.

Re: I have been reading posts on weight loss and

I have been counting carbs for quite sometime (and sticking with only GOOD carbs) - I have an ovarian condition that wreaks havoc on my hormones and has me somewhat carb intolerant.

I still snitch bites of the bad stuff - heck we live one town away from David Glass' dessert factory and he has tastings once a month!!! - but I try to keep it down to a minimum. I've also switched over to soy milk (8th continent) in place of regular milk. I can tolerate yogurt and cheese and even fresh whipped cream, but milk and half/half seem to bother me.

I too have heard that about "starving" yourself... although I personally have lost weight that way. Went thru a sad breakup about 21 years ago and I ate very little for 4 days and I lost 6 lbs. - and I was only 105 lbs. then to start with!

But the experts say it is good to eat several small meals over the course of a day, this helps regulate your blood sugar and keep things on an even keel. It also helps to stop you from pigging out at any one particular meal! :)

Re: I have been reading posts on weight loss and

Starving yourself generally works when you are really young (teenage through early 20's). I am consistantly amazed about hearing of women who eat one meal a day, and don't lose weight. Even skinny people I know maintain their weight on a tiny amount of calories, because they have slowed their metabolism down. I saw a documentary a few months ago where they said that a century ago people use to eat 3000 and more calories a day, and stayed fit and trim, but heck we were all very busy then-lol.

Re: I have been reading posts on weight loss and

Well, This morning I ate my first breakfast in what seems like forever! I had a plum.
Now funny thing is...where I normally wouldn't be hungry until dinner time if I hadn't eaten at all....I find myself starving now at lunch time lol since I ate that plum.
So I guess i'll go eat another piece of fruit for lunch. Funny how that worked lol

Re: I have been reading posts on weight loss and

I too, read about how your body can go int starvation mode.
I went on Nutrisystem and lost 12 pounds, gained 5 back over the summer (graduation parties, 4th of July, cruise, ect.) , and am in the process of trying to get rid of those 5. One down, 4 to go so far..
I usually eat a fat free yogurt w/granola, bran flakes or kashi cereal for breakfast...with 2% milk.....half a banana before lunch, then a salad for lunch, steamed veggies, and a bit of what the familly is having for dinner.
When I was in my 20's I could eat whatever I wanted without gaining an ounce. Now that, I'm 42 I can't hardly eat anythng without gaining!

Oh, and drink lots of fluids!

Re: I have been reading posts on weight loss and

If I eat 1st thing I am hungry all day. If I wait a hour or two I can eat and then not be hungry for along time. I have also seen and read about starvation mode. I found by exercising alot it increased my metabolism and really helped. I exercise 7 days a week at least a hour a day. I can now eat a little more and not gain back all the weight I lost.

Re: I have been reading posts on weight loss and

I have dicided I am into starvation mode too. I hardly eat much during the day and then a good dinner but can't lose weight just gain. HMMMMM

I've heard about the three hour diet. It's new and I hope not just another fad diet. It says eat breakfast then something small every three hours. Some other diets say every two hours.

I always eat breakfast of two slices of raisen bread and margarine and a small glass of orange juice.

Now I am trying to eat every three hours. Like a piece of fruit or a grainola bar. I know it won't work if I stuff myself. I think the secret is not to feel hungry and let your body think it needs food. It then uses up your lean muscle mass and that is what burns the calories. You are left with the fat.

It's really frustrating to starve yourself and gain weight and not lose it.

Losing weight is a tough job . Isn't it????? I really feel so.One and the only one method of losing weight is doing regular weight loss exercises and taking balanced diet. This method takes time but it causes no side effects. If you do this regularly, this is surely going to help you.
