Baffled A clicker/adding machine/calculator

Oh, please, someone help me out here. Do you guys remember a handheld calculator in the late 60's thru the 70's that your parents may have taken to the grocery store with them? It had three buttons on the top that was worked basically with your thumb, and when the first button pushed, worked the dollar ammount. The second button worked the ten category for cents and the third button, between 1 and 9 cents. It's hard to explain, but those of you who know will go, ohhhhh yeah!!!! My parents won't part with theirs, not that they use it anymore, but probably because I am in such a die hard mission to get one. These work so much better than a normal calculator because you can't just wipe the balance off by lightly hitting buttons, or the kids while fighting with the in the store-LOL. That's my main reason for wanting one. If anyone can help me out, I have paypal. No stores carry these, nor can I find on line. They had cost about 2-3$. Thanx, Joy

I know exactly what you're talking about, but I can't remember what they were called, drats.

I just asked my DH and he said they don't make them anymore. I guess you'll have to just use a small handheld calculator. I like the old style too.

Re: A clicker/adding machine/calculator

What a memory jolt! I had one that was bright red plastic with white buttons on the top. Does that sound like what you're trying to find? There's a very slim chance it's still here. Don't get your hopes up, but I'll check a couple of obscure junk drawers tomorrow and let you know if I can find it or not.

Re: A clicker/adding machine/calculator

Oh man!! I remember my mom having one of these! What a memory! Ours was also red with white buttons. Dang....I can almost tell you the name, but it's not coming to me. It will drive me nuts until I remember now. I'll probably remember once I am in bed. That's my "thinkin'" place...lol If I remember, I'll sign on so I don't forget in the morning. Man, that was soooo long ago...lol

Re: A clicker/adding machine/calculator

I remember those and I have been looking for one, too! My mom had one when I was little. It was red with white buttons. In fact, I remember a lot of the mommies in the store carried one. I've tried a calculator, but I always lose the total (stupid buttons). I'm thinking of writing to Harriet Carter, Miles Kimball, etc. to see if they have access to one they could sell. Sometimes you can find some really "hard to find" items through them.

Re: A clicker/adding machine/calculator

I checked a couple of junk drawers but couldn't find the red plastic grocery price adder-upper clicker thingie. However, I did find my old Girl Scout badge sash and a photo of a large group of some of my ancestors taken around 1900, which I had misplaced.

Here's a smaller type of the version above.

Been doing searches on eBay for mechanical calculator. Doesn't look like there's any of the red and white button kind on there.

Twinplets is welcome here
My parents had one when I was a kid, it's possible it's still in one of their junk drawers somewhere. I'll ask them next time I'm talking to them.

Re: A clicker/adding machine/calculator

This kind of hand-held mechanical calculator/adding machine type things are called accumulators. But doing a search on that produces nothing close to what we are looking for. Werem't they made out of bake-lite (bakelite) or some sort of plastic like that?
