Are showers still mandatory in high school?

My daughter will be starting high school next month and I told her she might have to take showers after gym class. She was horrified! 8o

I must agree, taking showers with classmates was very traumatic for me and I only did it a few times. It should be strictly voluntary IMHO. Does anyone's kids have to take them?

I actually remember taking them in 6th grade, that would have been around 1972. We didn't have any privacy, just one big room with showers.

Even when I was in high school they only had one big room with showers. ANd it was mandatory. Evil witch of a gym teacher would sit in her office and watch everyone to make sure they complied.

Sounds almost like we went to the same high school! Except, our nasty old gym teacher would stand at the entrance to the one big room with the showers and you weren't allowed a towel until you came out of the shower and were wet (had to turn around completely in front of her to make sure of that). I flunked in PE every year becuase I wouldn't always take a shower (even if we did tests, without working out, we were required to take them) and we got marked down in the attendence book if you didn't take one.

I graduated in 95 and never once did I take a shower in school. In fact, those of us that took regular gym class (as opposed to Athletics which were the kids who participated in the schools various teams) did not even have access to the showers. I know that there were some in the field house where the Athletics students got changed but I don't know if they ever used them. If they did it was not on a regular basis because I remeber listening to them grip about how they barely had time to put on their regular clothes and get to their next class.

I can't imagine having to shower in front of classmates. I am very self concious about my body and I did n't even like having to change clothes in front of other girls.

I graduated in 2001 and I remember that one of the gym teachers made the boys take showers but the girls didn't have to b/c he couldn't go in our locker room to enforce that. I don't think any of the other gym teacher made people take showers though. Some of the girls still took showers in the private showers or just wet their hair down in the communal showers.

NO ONE in my hs took showers after normal gym classes.

however, when we had our swimming sections, we would shower afterwards...but they were individual showers...private stalls...

I graduated in 1989 and we only had to shower after swimming when in JR high & High school. In Sr. High it was optional! I think that in this age of lawsuits & sexual misconduct, if there are mandatory showers, the instructors better be careful!

I don't get it!! Ya'll seem to be horrified by taking a shower with other same sex people! I served 12 years in the military. I lived in the barracks for about 6 of those years. After PT in the morning, we had about an hour to shower, shave, ****, eat, and get to formation. The shower rooms usually had about 8 shower heads, with 36 guys trying to take a shower at the same time! No one stared, no one said "ooooo....look at him, he has an ichy on his butt." We took our showers, and went about the days work! I hope they make every kid take a shower after gym class! Just my opinion of course.

flash,I think it's different for guys, girls are more self conscious about their bodies. Remember, at that age girls are still growing, developing breasts.

In Junior High I always hated gym class 'cause the showers were mandatory, and I also had a witch of a gym teacher who made us take showers. She'd stand there in front of the showers when we came out to make sure we were wet. The towels from what I remember weren't very big and I'm a tall person. I didn't like that either. They were private stalls, but I was slow to move especially after a gym workout, so there really wasn't enough time given to us for taking one. Plus the fact I had to change clothes in front of my fellow classmates in the locker room. I was mortified by that. The girls would compare what you wore, like, who wore a bra and who didn't. It was not a pleasant experience. I'm glad those days are over with.

Showers were not mandatory when I was in Jr/Sr High School... but in Jr. High the gym teacher was "extremely persuasive" about everyone taking a shower after gym. We had the one big shower room, boys and girls locker rooms... I outright refused to shower in front of all the other girls AND the teacher, yep she would watch us... And I had a "problem" with a grown woman watching me change clothes/shower! I remember one of the boys would shower with his underwear on... boy did he get harrassed about that!!! It's no wonder that people hate being that age...

In the Sr. High there was a shower in the girls locker room that was like a pie, round with dividing partitions...looked like a sliced pie, 6 shower heads...but no shower curtains! So where exactly was the "privacy"?

My old school just got a brand new K-12 campus built, I wonder what the new locker rooms look like???

In High School we were still required to take showers. I was always late if I did that. There just wasn't enough time, and then the bell would ring to go to class. My gym teachers were lesbians but at least the showers were enclosed, so they didn't watch.
